  1. Hey guys, what do you wear when you want something a bit nicer than a sneaker but not as formal as full-on dress shoes? Asking for a friend.

    1. I have this nice set of flats I found on the bottom of the clearance rack at Macy's. They're this kind of matte brown leather, sleek though not sharply shaped. Sensible, but very comfortable. In all honesty, I've worn them so much I wore the brand name off the tag so I couldn't even tell you what they are.

      1. Like what HJ said. I've got a pair of slip on brown shoes that are... apparently Dockers brand. Famous Footwear or somesuch for a reasonable enough price. Personally, I'd still call them "dress shoes" but that's more a failing of language than fashion. There are many levels of dress shoes.

Something like Doc Martens would probably work too.

        1. Had some brown canvas lace-up things that I liked as a middle ground. Lands End or LL Bean or some such.

        2. I've got a pair of Nunn Bush slip ons that I really like.

I go through a LOT of work shoes for various reasons, and I've worn this particular style for the last three iterations.

    2. *checks shoes* Sneakers.. boots.. dress shoes. Sorry, that category doesn't exist, can't help you.

      1. Ha! But wouldn't the boots be in that in-between category? Or are you talking about actual snow boots?

        1. Work boots. They do look nicer than sneakers, but I don't think they would pair well with the nicer clothes.

          1. Something like a standard Red Wing boot, or do you go with one of those nifty artisanal heritage logger styles that Red Wing, Wolverine, and so on are offering?

            1. Standard Red Wing. If I'm reading the tag right, it says #406, but that style isn't shown on their site and the 1206 is a match to what I actually have. I need to get them resoled but haven't done it yet because trying to find something more comfortable for the summer.

              1. Very similar-looking to the hiking boots I'd been using.
I had to retire them from semiformal use as the soles came unglued around the edges. My regluing job was not particularly tidy, though it may have bought me another year or two of woodland use.

    3. I just got a pair of Doc Martens, I think they're this one, although my step-dad gave them to me. they're a whole lot better than the cheap boat shoes I was wearing that were uncomfortable as hell.

      1. Yup, though my chukkas get less wear in the winter months when I opt for a leather oxford with hiking tread over a suede chukka. I traded in my Clarks desert boots for a really comfortable pair of Birkenstock chukkas three years ago and haven't looked back.

    4. I've gone with leather-uppers hiking boots or similar (until they started looking worn).
I hit the clearance section of DSW occasionally and try to anticipate future needs.

    5. My sneakers are tan, so I just use those as my nicer than my normal casual (sandals) but not quite dress shoes. I'm not much for formality and dressing up, though, so my baseline for how dressy things should look is probably lower than most

  2. My brother just sent me an email from the Robert Mondavi Winery wine club: June 11, Twins at Giants. Pre-game festivities in Triples Alley, watch batting practice from the field, then be escorted across the warning track to Lower Box 103. $150 per person. Hmmmm.

Were you seriously considering this, bS? I think I could talk Mrs. Runner into letting me go on an unsupervised weekend trip...

  3. Junior played in his first high school baseball game today. He started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a single to right field. He also pitched a couple innings. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. Not bad for a freshman. His team lost 7-1. It could be a long season. They have no seniors and only a couple juniors. The team's 2 best players are sophomores and since Trey's junior high team made the playoffs this year, it looks like they could be pretty good in a couple years. It also could mean plenty of opportunities for experience for Junior in the interim.
