Game 6: Twins at White Sox

Ervin Santana vs. Jose Quintana

The Twins started last year at 2-19 on the road before finally winning a road series in mid-May. Getting a win today to take the series would get this first road trip off to a good start and keep the momentum going after the Twins sustained their first loss yesterday.

This will be the third left-handed starter the Twins will face, which figures to be a year-long struggle for the Twins with 4 starting players left-handed. So far, the Twins are 2-0 vs. lefty starters, but that was largely because their own pitching and defense kept the game close until they could do a lot of their damage against the bullpen. So far, the Twins have actually been better vs. lefties (.770 OPS vs. .702 against righties), but that is largely skewed by the ineptitude of the left-handers in the Kansas City bullpen.

Quintana was the subject of numerous offseason trade rumors after the White Sox traded Chris Sale and Adam Eaton for prospects. Quintana struggled in his first start as his team's No. 1 starter, giving up 6 runs, including 3 home runs, to the Tigers on Opening Day. Santana is hoping to build on his great Opening Day performance of 1 run on 7 innings in a win over the Royals.

  1. Pale Hosers wearing their Sunday beach blanket throwbacks. Not the worst look in their franchise's repertoire, though I'm a bit surprised there is so much nostalgia for them given the club's ineptitude when wearing the originally.

Then again, I really like the powder blue sansabelts the Twins wore from '73-'86.

  2. It continues to chap my hide when Bert says "In today's game, that's what you're looking for."

Today's game is the one you're calling. Please stop hearkening back to decades-old approaches to innings pitched.

      1. He did it again later when referring to the fact that players typically get their own hotel rooms. It is so bizarre that he continues to reiterate that he's talking about today's game, as if the listener's instinct would be to assume that he was talking about the '80s. It's like Mitch Hedberg's joke about corn: "You don't need to call it corn on the cob. That's corn in its natural state. Everything else is corn off the cob."

        1. Well, you know, those multimillionaires of today probably miss the good ol' days of road roomies and curfew checks....

  3. Is it just me or do the umps seem to be really strict about check swings this year?

  4. Despite not scoring a run, there were some quality PAs this inning. After getting out of the first with just seven pitches thrown, the middle & bottom of the order got Quintana to throw thirty-four pitches.

  5. TV feed completely crapped out on me just as I got the Poissonnier down for her nap. Guess I'll listen and wash some dishes.

  6. I've been in and out all day, but what I've seen has been what looks like a number of very good at bats against an excellent pitcher? That match up for the most part? Even Buxton (the one I saw)?

    1. Yup. They've shown some pretty good patience, working the count & fouling off stuff. I'm impressed.

  7. Picked up a sixer of this yesterday. Pretty good (I do like a nice Kölsch), though occasionally a bit too dry for my taste. Certainly something I could enjoy over a long, hot summer.

    1. Though I haven't tried that one yet, I'm a fan of said brewery and also partial to a good Kölsch. Will definitely keep my eyes peeled for some of that.

      1. I think I've had that one. I too enjoy a nice Kölsch-style beer, but is that one, or is it a "Golden Ale"??

True Kölsch is made with top-fermenting yeast (like an ale), but lagered. Hmmmm.

      1. Not on MLB.tv anymore, ever since I moved home. I suppose I could go through the trouble of finding the station on my receiver.

        1. This reminds me that I've been very curious if the radio crew can even be heard all around the metro now that they're on FM.

          1. Should be able to hear them fine for most of the metro. The edges probably have issues now, though.

        2. I recommend ballpark sounds. I'm getting games at no cost on the fox sports app, but it's tempting to pay for mlb.tv for ballpark sounds.

  8. I'd like to have seen Santana go one more inning, but on the other hand, it's a long season and we need him to stay healthy, so I'm not going to criticize Molitor for doing it this way.

  9. Its not often you see a pitcher with a single digit uniform number, but Matt Belisle has it.

  10. Whenever I hear the name "Yolmer" I think of one of the characters from Lake Wobegon.

  11. Don't know what that was about, but if there's any problem, take him out. We need him for the season, not just for this game.

  12. That third ball to Garía was a better pitch than the one Kepler was run up on.

  13. 19 of the next 25 games are road games for the Pale Hose. They opened the season 2-3. They could be buried by the first week of May.

  14. We don't win a lot of series at Comiskey. I can't bring myself to say this team is good yet, but they sure don't seem to be that bad.

    1. 6 games, against the Royals and White Sox. I won't even say they're not bad yet. Except to Trueblood, because my proclaiming them to be the best team ever really riles him.

        1. Agreed. I just worry what the offense and pitching will look like against good teams. That defense... very nice.

          1. I remain cautiously optimistic largely because, yeah, it hasn't been against the best but the pitching has looked good. Like, the results are good but the appearance had been good toone (Mejia excepted. )

  15. This is a good tweet.
