My kids' school had a late start this morning. Just because. Seems everyone else 'round these parts did too.

... so Keuchel & Verlander ftw(s)!1??!
Some people have been alleging that it's more fun when the Yankees are in the playoffs, as it gives them a team to root against. I find that line of reasoning to be utter trash. No matter which two teams are playing - even if I haven't a predetermined preference - I always end up picking one to root for (and generally end up disappointed). To paraphrase quite a few people, "Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for Goldman Sachs" ... I wish they'd end up like Lehman Bros.
If the WS is Astros/Dodgers I may have a hard time picking a rooting interest
League average payroll vs. Tippy Top Payroll. Easy choice.
Of course, if its Dodgers/Yankees, I've decided I'm just not going to watch at all, so I disagree with what some people have been alleging.
(I'm still not upset the Clevelands are out, though.)
I want Kershaw to pitch a perfect game to win the World Series some day.
That would be cool, I have to admit.
If it has to be Dodgers/Yankmes, I want Kershaw pitching three perfect games and saving a fourth.
I'm completely okay with LA winning it, so that they can move into full on villain mode.
I certainly wouldn't be upset or annoyed if LA won, mostly because Puig.
Last night was awesome when Baez tagged him trying to advance, waved a finger in his face, and Puig just laughed. I love watching players enjoy the game.
If its Astros-Dodgers, then I want it to be a 7 game series of good baseball and however wins I'm cool with that.
If its Astros-Cubs , I want an Astros sweep
If its Yankees-Dodgers, I wouldnt mind a 5 or 6 game series with the Dodgers winning
If Yankee-Cubs , I'll watch but cheer against both teams (maybe pull tor the Cubs?)
The Yankees-Cubs one is tough. Both managers annoy me. The Cubs don't have Chapman or Gardner which is a plus, but they have Lester and Lackey. But I also wouldn't mind seeing Aaron Judge hit like 8 homers in a series (though the media coverage would be insufferable). I'd probably root for the Cubs because I love Baez so much.
I would definitely root for the Astros what with Houston needing a lift after Harvey plus the Astros never winning the World Series. I would have no problem rooting for the Dodgers against the Yankees since the Dodgers haven't been to the World Series since winning it in '88 plus Angels fans annoy me and this would piss them off.
Raise your hand if you thought Chris Paul would be a great fit with Houston.
And yet, Houston is going to be good.
Just finished watching the second half. Chris Paul was bad. The Warriors did not take care of the ball in the 4th quarter, and Harden and Co. made them pay.
The season is 82 games long. I'll bet that Chris Paul and Harden figure it out.
Fifty years ago today, about a hundred yards from my office, police beat & gassed students protesting on-campus recruiting efforts by a company supplying napalm to the US military.
My dad experienced one of the protests in Madison, but not until a few years after this one. I don't believe he went with the intent to protest ... mostly just to see, and what he saw shook him pretty damn well & good.
Did he say what the protest was about? In 2019 we’ll mark the fiftieth anniversary of the protests that led to the creation of the Afro-American Studies department. The National Guard was called out to that one. I have a scan of a photo of Guardsmen behind a Jeep-mounted .30-cal machine gun pointed at students.
I don't recall if he told me. I remember his description of what he saw and felt more vividly than any sense of what prompted the protest. Your 9:47 LTE prompted a text to him ... waiting to see what he has to say.
So, from what I'm understanding I should not, under any circumstances, watch the Gordon Hayward injury from last night?
I accidentally saw the wide angle screenshot of it. And you are correct, under no circumstances should you watch it. For further proof, here is a shot of the reaction of the Cavs bench (injury not shown).
The reaction rolls over them like the crowd doing the wave.
If I were sitting near the him, I'd be a little concerned about the guy that stands up to try to get a better look...
Yeah, based on that I'm never looking at the actual injury if I can help it.
I avoided looking at Napoleon McCallum's for a while. That's one of the grossest I've seen.
Joe Theismann will always stick in my mind. I think that was back before they thought, "you know what, maybe there are some things that you shouldn't replay over and over again."
That was the worst I've ever seen. Another terrible, terrible injury was Tim Krumrie in the Super Bowl. His leg snapped in a non-contact situation, which was astoundingly awful. The Hayward injury was freakish and awful and heartbreaking. He had played five minutes for the Celtics when this happened.
It seems like something you would expect to happen to the Wolves.
Are you tempting fate?
It was more severe than Mauer's knee injury as a rookie, but I remember all that anticipation being washed away by that slide on the warning track at the Metrodome.
I think to Dave Dravecky's arm snapping in mid pitch.
There was an account of a Twins minor leaguer who's ankle gave way on stepping on first base such that his foot was facing the other direction, and quick thinking on someone's account "re-adjusted it" so that blood flow returned to the foot
The sound was what was horrible about that. I don't remember so much the visual of it.
Jason Kendall’s is the one that always comes to my mind.
Didn't Posey have one similar to Kendall's? Or was his the one at homeplate and is the reason the rules changed for plays at home.
Posey isn't why the rule changed, it's because of Avila. Posey was injured in 2011 but the rule wasn't in place until 2014. Avila was injured, albeit not as severely as Posey, in the 2013 ALCS. I do think Posey's injury made it possible for it to change however. Having your dad on the rule committee team makes it a lot easier to propose new rules that protect you.
There were no cameras recording Teddy Bridgewater's injury at practice last year, but by all accounts it was pretty horrific. They weren't sure he was ever going to return or even walk again.
I intend not to see it either.
I saw it live. It was gruesome. I was so excited to watch that game -- and it was a pretty exciting game right to the very last second, but after the injury I was just sick to my stomach.
I thought about this last night, though. GH is getting paid 9 figures to play for the Celtics. People get hurt and killed at work every day for a lot less. So....
Nope. Still sickened by it.
Getting seriously injured on the job is bad, no matter the job. Preventing workplace deaths & injuries is always good business. Supporting the people effected – and holding the culpable parties legally & financialy responsible – is a crucial piece of occupational, financial, & medical security, especially for non-salaried workers & their families.
Perkins is a free agent. I wonder if he tries to come back for 2018 or not.
The Twins won't pick up the 2018 option in Glen Perkins' contract. Instead, they'll pay the $700,000 buyout, and Perk is now a free agent.
I suspect he will. He worked awfully hard to get this far. Unless he's convinced that there's no way he can be an effective major league pitcher again, I think he'll try again next season.
If I were Perkins or Mauer and planned to re-sign with my hometown team, I would have my agent write into the contract that all media requests from anyone at the Star Tribune are to be immediately & pointedly refused.
Didn’t top jimmy already announce his scoop on perk’s early retirement?
I hope that chicken will come home to roost.
I'd like to see Perk take Souhan's job.
I'd prefer just about anyone to take Souhan's job.
