April 30, 2019: The Headwaters Of Jazz

I hadn't realized how amazing 1959 was for jazz. 60 years ago, some of the most influential recordings in jazz were released, including Kind of Blue, The Shape of Jazz to Come, Giant Steps, Time Out, and Mingus Ah Um. I don't have a whole lot of jazz in my library, but I have all of these.

  1. Yeah, 1959 was pretty awesome. Some other albums from that year that are well worth anyone’s time: Abbey Lincoln’s Abbey is Blue, Milt Jackson & John Coltrane’s Bags & Trane, Chet Baker’s Chet, Dinah Washington’s What a Diff'rence a Day Makes!, Bill Evans’ Portrait in Jazz, Oliver Nelson’s Meet Oliver Nelson, Horace Silver’s Blowin’ the Blues Away and Finger Poppin’, Art Pepper’s +Eleven, and Jimmy Smith’s The Sermon!.

  3. Foals at 1st Ave ...Tuesday night: doors at 7, headliners starts at 10 ... prima donnas.
    /break/
    8 songs in 25 minutes ... we’ll alrighty then

  4. Twins versus Orioles: 6-0, 7.5 runs per game, 3.83 home runs per game;
    Twins versus everyone else: 11-10, 4.57 runs per game, 1.29 home runs per game.

    I like what the Twins have done, but we'll have a better feel for them after the next two games against Houston and a six-game road trip to New York and Toronto.
