  1. So, Mets want Buxton and more for Thor? No thank u. Blue Jays wanted Lewis or Kiroloff for Stroman, yet settle for far less from the Mets. Sounds like the Twins are shifting their plan to just relief pitching targets. I am ok with not mortgaging the farm

    1. The Blue Jays wanted either Lewis or Kirilloff, yet settled for two prospects outside the Top 100. I don’t know which end of that makes them look more silly; they very likely could’ve gotten a better deal from the Twins if they’d moderated their demands.

      1. I seriously wonder how much discussion goes into these discussions. Is it "We won't do it unless you include Lewis or Kirilloff you think about it and let us know." Or is it "How about Lewis or Kirilloff?" "No, but how about X, Y, Z..." "Well, we need some higher upside, what about A, or B plus Y, & Z" "We could look at B, but just one of Y or Z, and we'd need some $ back too" "We can't do the money thing, but we'll think about it..." etc.

I know it'd be hard for writers to really open the door on this, but... sometimes what we hear about these discussions seems so absurd that I kind of doubt real people are having them.

        Then again... forbidden zone.

        1. I'm with you. Just like I'm sure the Mets said, "Hey willing to depart with Buxton? No? Well, how about..." and the Twins told Lavelle that the Mets asked for Buxton to make them look reasonable for not getting Syndergaard.

          1. That said, there have been some after-the-fact reports at times that seem to back up the absurdity of these discussions too.

              1. I honestly have no idea what they're doing. I saw this morning that the buzz is that they'll trade Wheeler to the Astros. But, wasn't the plan to move Thor and keep Wheeler? Maybe they don't want to trade Syndergaard, that's fine. I just think that if they think fair value is "huge contributor on a team making a playoff push" that they're not going to get that value.

  2. Anyone with experience saving an apple tree from blight? Ours has a trunk that splits into two, and one of the halves was an entire loss - I've cut that down. You can actually see on the trunk where the two halves combine the part that is alive and the part that is dead from the growth on the outside of the tree (living moss vs. non). The other part of the tree may or may not be affected (apparently blight works from the top down) so I cut down one big branch that had some dead stuff on it (unclear if dead because blight or other). Our tree looks completely absurd now. Very curious to see if it'll survive or if I'll be taking the rest of it out next spring.

Using the new chainsaw was fun though!

    1. follow my friend laderafrutal on flickr and ask him. He's an accomplished grower of fruit trees (in his spare time he's one of the world's leading scholars of electoral systems; he's also a huge Angels fan, but I don't hold that against him Because Trout). Use my name as reference (my IRL one).

        1. heh. I shared your question on teh Bookface and poked him with a stick (not a Stick).

          1. Thanks! The lady at the local nursery seemed to think I was some sort of monster for not having already cut everything that might someday think about tending towards being blight.

    2. I had a young apple tree by the house in Scandia that was completely girded by rabbits so that there was a complete ring of bark missing.

I used an Exacto knife to clean the edges where the rabbits had chewed it. Then cut off the top of the tree, and peeled strips of bark at the right length from the top part. Then I carefully placed the strips around the base area that had been stripped, then used duct tape to seal it up.

The tree lived and is still there.

  3. At Rocky Mountain National Park. We let the graduate pick the vacation destination. A few days of hiking with a day of horseback riding. Other than chance of storms every day, should be fun.

          1. I slept well but felt like I was hungover this morning. Downed a couple water bottles. Feel fine now.

            1. A couple times a night I would wake myself up gasping. Apparently your respiration is regulated by CO2 exhalation, not O2 inhalation, so the body hasn't quite caught up to the need for breathing slightly more often at night.

            2. Usually you acclimate after about 24 hours, but yes lots of water. How high you going? Most of RNP is over 9,000 feet if I recall. And yes, you can anticipate a rain storm practically every day around 4:00p or so.

If you follow me on FB, you saw my Glacier photos. I think the highest I got was 8,500 feet and had no issues. Beautiful place and would love to talk to anyone about if interested in visiting.

              1. I'm not sure on elevation yet. Doing any easy hike this evening and more difficult tomorrow early morning.

              2. We were around 9000 feet. Did 3 hikes in the late afternoon/early evening totalling 4 miles. Have 5.8 mapped out for tomorrow morning.

    1. Not that I am a fan of Fenton, but its pretty messed up to fire a GM that quickly.

  4. After the current series wrap up...

    Cleveland (48 games - 25 home/29 away - 23 vs AL Central - 32 vs .500+above):

4 games vs Yankees (.632)and White Sox (.447)
    3 games vs Rangers (.500), Red Sox (.551), Mets (.476), Royals (.370), Rays (.556), and Nationals (.533)

    Minnesota (48 games - 29 home/25 away - 39 vs AL Central - 25 vs .500+above):
10 games vs Indians (.583), Royals (.370), and Tigers (.304)
9 games vs White Sox (.447)
    4 games vs Rangers (.500)
3 games vs Braves (.583), Red Sox (.551), and Nationals (.533)
    2 games vs Brewers (.523)

      1. Okay, both teams have played 106, so 56 remaining. I'll have to check my table against the schedules again, I must have transposed something wrong or missed a couple of series. But not tonight, I'm tired now.
