Minor Details: Games of July 9

A bad game for Chandler Shepherd.  A bad game for Jason Garcia.  An excellent game for Kody Funderburk.  Big games for Louie Varland and Yunior Severino.

IOWA 15, ST. PAUL 2 IN IOWA

The Cubs scored five in the first and it was never close.

Batting stars:  Willians Astudillo was 2-for-4.  Sherman Johnson was 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.

Pitching star:  Andrew Vasquez retired all five men he faced, striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Ex-Twin Tyler Ladendorf was 4-for-5 with a home run (his second) and five RBIs.  Andrew Romine was 4-for-6 with two runs.  Matt Swarmer pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks and striking out four.

Starter:  Chandler Shepherd pitched four innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on thirteen hits and one walk and striking out two.

Good stats:  Jose Miranda was 1-for-4 and is batting .350.  Astudillo is batting .303.

Bad stats:  Keon Broxton was 0-for-3 and is batting .180.  Roberto Pena was 1-for-4 and is batting .190.  Shepherd has an ERA of 6.75.  Ian Gibaut allowed three runs in 1.1 innings and has an ERA of 8.53.

Record:  The Saints are 28-29, tied for third in the AAA East/Midwest, eight games behind Omaha.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS 10, WICHITA 2 IN WICHITA

The Wind Surge led 2-0 through three, but the Naturals scored nine in the fourth.  Five of the runs were unearned.  Wichita made four errors in the game.

Batting stars:  Ernie De La Trinidad was 2-for-2.  B. J. Boyd was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching star:  Adam Lau pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.

Opposition stars:  Nick Pratto was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Dairon Blanco was 3-for-5.  Andres Sotillet pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Starter:  Jason Garcia pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on two hits and four walks and striking out three.

Good stats:  De La Trinidad is batting .319.

Bad stats:  Garcia has an ERA of 5.73.  Lau has an ERA of 7.00.  Calvin Faucher allowed five unearned runs in two innings and has an ERA of 8.10.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 31-27, in second place in the AA Central/North, one game behind Tulsa.

CEDAR RAPIDS 9, PEORIA 8 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The Kernels scored in six of the first eight innings and led 8-3.  The Chiefs scored five in the ninth to tie it, but DaShawn Keirsey's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off for Cedar Rapids.

Batting stars:  Max Smith was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer (his second), a double, two walks, and two runs.  Wander Javier was 2-for-4 with a home run (his eighth), a double, and three RBIs.  Seth Gray was 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Kody Funderburk struck out six in six innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits and a walk.  Breckin Williams made his Cedar Rapids debut and pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Jordan Walker was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs.  Leandro Castro was 2-for-5 with a home run (his fifth), a double, and four RBIs.  Chandler Redmond was 2-for-5.

Good stats:  Williams has an ERA of zero.

Bad stats:  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 0-for-4 and is batting .135.  Tyler Palm gave up an unearned run in one inning and has an ERA of 7.52.

Record:  The Kernels are 32-26, in second place in the High-A Central/West, six games behind Quad Cities.

FORT MYERS 13, ST. LUCIE 5 IN ST. LUCIE

The Mighty Mussels scored seven in the second and the Mets never got closer than five.  Yunior Severino hit a three-run homer in the inning.

Batting stars:  Charles Mack was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Severino was 2-for-5 with a home run (his fifth), a double, two runs, and five RBIs.  Ruben Santana was 1-for-1 with a two-run homer.

Pitching stars:  Louie Varland struck out ten in five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk.  Zaquiel Puentes pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and two walks and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Brandon McIlwain was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Anthony Walters was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Joe Suozzi was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his second.

Good stats:  Varland has an ERA of 2.09.  Puentes has an ERA of 2.70.

Bad stats:  Kole McKinnon was 0-for-1 in his professional debut and is batting zero.  Jesus Feliz was 1-for-3 and is batting .133.  Nick Anderson was 1-for-5 and is batting .143.  Aaron Sabato was 0-for-2 and is batting .187.  Willie Joe Garry, Jr. was 1-for-3 and is batting .199.  Carlos Suniaga allowed three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings and has an ERA of 6.10.

Record:  The Mighty Mussels are 33-25, in third place in the Low-A Southeast/West, 6.5 games behind Tampa.
