Minor Details: Games of September 1

A good game for Bryan Sammons.  Chris Vallimont pitches well in a loss.  So does Sawyer Gipson-Long.  Christian Encarnacion-Strand keeps hitting.

ST. PAUL 9, COLUMBUS 2 IN COLUMBUS

The Saints scored five runs in the first inning.

Batting stars:  Gilberto Celestino was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.  Jose Miranda was 2-for-5.  Drew Maggi was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer (his thirteenth), a walk, and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Bryan Sammons pitched five innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits and three walks and striking out four.  Luke Farrell pitched a scoreless inning, walking one.  Derek Law pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks.  Robinson Leyer struck out two in a scoreless inning, walking one.

Opposition stars:  Andruw Monasterio was 2-for-2 with two walks.  Steven Kwan was 2-for-5.

Good stats:  Miranda is batting .331.  Tomas Telis was 1-for-4 and is batting .300.

Julio Rodriguez hit a two-run double in the seventh to tie it 3-3 and the deciding run scored in the eighth on an error.

Batting star:  Roy Morales was 3-for-4 with a double.

Pitching star:  Chris Vallimont struck out nine in five innings, giving up one run on three hits and four walks.

Opposition stars:  Jack Larsen was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Patrick Frick was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Steven Moyers struck out seven in four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks.

Good stats:  Morales is batting .312.

Bad stats:  Caleb Hamilton was 0-for-4 and is batting .192.  Vallimont has an ERA of 5.75.  Erik Manoah, Jr. gave up a run in two innings and has an ERA of 7.56.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 61-43, in first place in the AA Central/North, five games ahead of Arkansas and Tulsa.

QUAD CITIES 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Nathan Eaton hit a two-run homer in the fifth to break a scoreless tie.

Pitching star:  Sawyer Gipson-Long pitched six innings, giving up two runs on one hit and three walks and striking out four.

Opposition stars:  Eaton was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs.  Christian Cosby struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.

Good stats:  Denny Bentley gave up a run in 1.1 innings and has an ERA of 1.23.  Gipson-Long has an ERA of 2.35.

Bad stats:  Osiris German gave up a run in 1.2 innings and has an ERA of 5.21.

A bases-loaded walk brought home the deciding run in the eighth.

Pitching stars:  Matthew Swain struck out six in three innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks.  Matt Mullenbach struck out four in three innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.  Zaquiel Puentes struck out four in two innings, giving up an unearned run on no hits and three walks.

Opposition stars:  Daniel Vellojin was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Leonardo Seminati was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Thomas Farr struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

Good stats:  Encarnacion-Strand is batting .344.  Jake Rucker was 1-for-3 and is batting .320.  Puentes has an ERA of 0.50.
