December 8, 2021: Long Lasting

I should have known what kind of suggestions I would get for a new backpack around here. Of course we've all had our own well chosen indestructibles for 20+ years.

  1. 1970 Rewind is in a non-weather delay. If nothing unexpected happens, it should be ready within an hour or so.

  2. I found out that I'm covid negative (!) but I'm definitely sick. Turns out the common cold is still common and still makes you sick. I haven't had any kind of illness (!) since Feb of 2020 when we think that we both had the early onset of the 'ronas. Turns out being sick still sucks.

    1. A really nasty cold is running rampage through our organization. Everyone is testing negative but really sick for 36-60 hours.

      1. Here's my question. Is "running rampage" even a malapropism? I'm not sure. It makes too much sense.

          1. I will be accepting all broderick gifs today as counterpoints. Unless you pronounce it as jiff; then you are just the monster and I'll accept selfies of you running.

    2. oh man, the beginning of the school year was rough with the kids being back in contact with other germ spreaders. We didn't get the Vid, but we all got sick as hell.

      1. We were just talking about this last night, but at this point we're kinda worried about Kid2 since she's never been to daycare at all. When she is finally able to go, she's going to be so sick all the time

        1. That's been the case with our youngest and yes, pretty much. Many minor colds that no one else gets.

        2. My daughter never went to daycare, either. But, she also didn't get sick much once she started school. So, you never know.

  3. After a long layoff, the presidential biography project is back on. I languished with the WHH book and tried to read it a couple of times. It was interminably boring and somewhat offensive in its treatment of the natives that Harrison was subduing in the Indiana territory. On Friday last, I finally gave up and looked for a different book on Harrison and I found it. I've since finished it and I"m close to finishing my Tyler book, too. I doubt that I'll wrote 1700 word posts on these presidents -- my life is too hectic to commit to that -- but I will summarize briefly the books I've read to this point (after Madision). This book on Tyler is ... extraordinary. Wow, what a book. What a story. What a train wreck his presidency was. The book was written in 2020(!), so it has a decidedly modern feel. I know that Chernow didn't write it, but if you had told me that he did, I would absolutely believe it. I'll finish it tonight and then on to Polk.

  4. Dr. Chop just had an interview with the NEH that went extremely well. I’m hoping that this could be a remote work job and that we won’t have to face the idea of moving to the swamp…..

    1. DC is great (and not sure I'm reading that reference right)! I also hope its remote. But DC IS GREAT.

  5. We're not letting AT&T push us around this trip: we've left our phones in airplane mode and turned on wifi calling, so we can keep our international rates in our pockets. Works great for all-inclusive, where it's the same wifi connection the whole time.

      1. I would love to ditch Uverse, but I don't see it happening soon. We got rid of the phone service from the bundle a couple years ago (no great loss, no great gain). But losing the cable to go only with streaming seems a step too far.

          1. We've been streaming only for a few years now and I love it, although less so recently now that we have to subscribe to like twenty different services.

            1. Are there streaming aggregators yet? Like, a service that provides access to all your channels on a single platform and we can just go channel to channel? Then we'll be full-circle on this.
