April 30, 2022: Grizzly

Well, for better or worse, I missed all but the last couple minutes of the game. I was hoping for more, but I still really loved this team this year. They were a lot of fun to watch.

  1. Last night, Mets pitchers threw a combined no hit shutout against the Phillies. They tossed more walks (6) than pitchers on the mound (5)

    1. Maybe this is just me, but I’m experiencing severe no-hitter fatigue. At this point I view “combined no-hitter” as emblematic of things wrong with MLB: Five pitchers who each throw a couple innings filled with some mix of high-90s gas & mid-90s sliders coming out of unique arm slots somehow stymying the opposing hitters doesn’t really impress me — given the TTO state of the game, I should actually expect it. Rather, it seems like a boring game that results in me only really wind up caring about whether my team wins or not. Would I take it as Twins win in the final game of a World Series? Sure. Would a combined no-hitter be the most memorable final game of a World Series? Not remotely.

What makes a no-hitter special isn’t some masterclass in raw dominance. It’s one pitcher facing a lineup all the times through and, with his catcher, somehow coming up with ways to keep batters from locking in on his stuff or his approach. Some special defense sprinkled in there can keep things interesting.

      1. i dunno. i think they’re treated with about the reverence they deserve, which isn’t a whole
lot. of course, i don’t consume the surrounding sports media, so maybe they take it more seriously.

        1. With the NFL Draft sucking up most of the air of sports media, and locally the NBA Playoffs getting steam, it probably didnt register much outside the MLB Network.

I didnt know about it until I was looking at box scores on b-r.com and noticed a shutout

          1. I have all the news notifications disabled in the app because of how eager it is for notifying. Thus I didn't know about the no-hitter until I opened The Athletic.

      2. Only way out I see is further decreasing available pitchers and further decreasing times players can't be sent down. Then not every pitcher will give max effort on every single pitch.

        1. I’d like to see both of those things. I’m hopeful a sensible pitch clock would also lead to pitchers pacing themselves better. I wouldn’t be averse to lowering the mound, although I’d want to see whether the problem self-corrects if pitchers can’t throw max effort every pitch.

    1. I got the Ryobi from Home Despot. 40V battery pack, works interchangeably with my Ryobi blower.

I have been very satisfied with both. The grass catcher is a little small, but my lawn is too. Quiet, cuts well.

      1. This is the right answer: if you have already bought into one battery system, it's best to stick with that system. Wirecutter prefers Ego over Ryobi while Consumer Reports prefers Ryobi over Ego but it's very close.
