December 15, 2022: Blast From The Past

While snacking on some late night pistachios, I randomly remembered and wondered what happened to those red dyed ones. Apparently, it's an interesting story...

Well, okay, it wasn't that interesting.

  1. I first had pre-shelled pistachios in a lounge in Hilton Istanbul, with a martini overlooking the Bosphorus (maybe 1994). They had a fantastic hammam. The inflation rate was 140%. Nothing had prices written on it as they would have to change them in a week.

  2. Neighbor has quite a production going on this morning next door: chainsaws and articulated boom claw taking out a big @ss oak tree. Looking forward to seeing it gone as it is full of wasp galls which litter the side lawn, along with the acorns and leaves (which always wait for a north wind before falling). Also, because allergies.

    1. They had to use the boom to take down the dead oak in our front yard this fall because it had three utility company boxes under it. That also jacked up the price quite a bit.

        1. I did wake up this morning to find a six foot long oak limb on the deck, looked like a woodpecker had been working on it and then the wet snow brought it down.

  3. We are in day four of a winter storm. School let out early Monday and hasn't been back. The snow has pretty much stopped, but the wind is very strong. Power started going on and off at about 4:30 this morning, then went out completely around 7:00. It's back on now, so I hope it will stay on. I don' t know much the people get paid who have to go out in the storms and get the power working again, but whatever it is, it isn't enough.

  4. Anyone have an interesting cheesecake flavor idea? A couple people at work are going to have a cheesecake competition, and I was thinking about slipping in a secret entry. So far, I'm considering a lavender lemon or a tiramisu cheesecake.

    1. If you want an unusual & striking color — ube, adzuki, macha, or red velvet.

If you want an unusual flavor — durian, macha (green!) or guava (add food coloring and you can mimic Hawaiian guava cake).

But if you really want to lean into the season — egg nog, gingersnap, or Tom & Jerry.

    2. Keeping with the spirits of the season theme, I nominate Amaretto, Frangelico, or Crème de Menthe.

  5. I’m on a plane, waiting to take off for my last trip back to Cali for a while. Was a little worried the storm would delay or cancel things, but so far so good.

I’m taking one kid for various doctor appointments tomorrow, then a late flight back to Minnesota tomorrow. At that point, I’ll be in the North for the rest of the school year. I’ll be glad to no longer be shuttling back and forth between two houses.
