January 31, 2024: Radio Silence

Power went out yesterday and, since it was daytime, I wasn’t sure if it was everyone’s house or just mine. I stumbled on an answer to that question I wouldn’t have thought of: check the wi-fi networks in range. Tumbleweeds.

  1. Two nearby homes have whole-home generators so I only need to open the door and listen for the noise. That didn't work once and that lead to several hours of lineworkers trying to figure out how to fix our power.

  2. I don't know if anyone here is a Amazon Prime member but I dropped my Prime membership in December and I'm here to tell you that it can be done. First, I really wasn't using Prime for anything but the free 2-day shipping. So I was paying some $150/year for that service.

Without Prime one can get free shipping for purchases over $35. It doesn't come in two days but Amazon also under-promises and over-delivers on shipping time. A few times when I made the order it said 6 days to deliver and then it came in 4 or 5 days.

So I learned to bundle my purchases to get them over $35. Also, If I need something right away, I go to Walgreens, the hardware store, bookstore, etc., and just buy it - novel concept, I know! (Also I don't do Target, Costco, etc)

YMMV, especially since I'm a single guy buying for one but I'm telling you, no issues from this guy.

      1. We use their streaming service too. I need to check how much we spent on Amazon the previous year. I believe it's enough to make Prime worth it but our overall usage has dropped. Now Target does get so, so much of our household's money.
