DSL TWINS 10, DSL RANGERS BLUE 9 AT TWINS (10 INNINGS)

The Twins trailed 5-1, then led 8-7, but needed a double steal of second and home to tie it in the ninth.  A sacrifice fly brought home the deciding run in the tenth.

Multi-hit games:  Nestor Urbina was 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk, and three runs.  Daiber De Los Santos was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Merphy Hernandez was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

Home runs:  None.

Multi-RBI games:  Hernandez 3 (24); Alver Medina 2 (11).

Stolen bases:  Hernandez 2 (33); Guillermo Sosa 2 (6); Luis Fragoza (20); De Los Santos (14); Urbina (8).

Pitching prowess:  Jose Vasquez struck out four in four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk.  Sebastian Pulido pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Jerry Neudecker was an American League umpire from 1966-1985.  He was the last major league umpire to use an outside chest protector.

Jerry Crawford was a major league umpire from 1976-2010.  He is tied with Bruce Froemming for the most postseason games umpired, 111.

Jim Reboulet is the brother of ex-Twin Jeff Reboulet. He was in the minors for six years, reaching AAA. He had three seasons with sixty or more stolen bases.

COLUMBUS CLIPPERS 6, ST. PAUL SAINTS 5 IN ST. PAUL

Columbus scored three in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.  St. Paul got within 5-4 and 6-5 but could not tie it up.

Multi-hit games:  Anthony Prato was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and two RBIs.

Home runs:  Edouard Julien (7); Prato (3).

Multi-RBI games:  Prato 2 (23); Julien 2 (19).

Stolen bases:  None.

Pitching prowess:  Zack Weiss pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.  Matt Bowman struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition standout:  Johnathan Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs, and two RBIs.

Andrew Cossetti and Ben Ross each homered in the fourth to give Wichita a 4-0 lead.

A sacrifice fly in the eighth broke a 3-3 tie.

Pitching prowess:  Mike Paredes pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.  Jordan Carr struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Gabriel Yanez retired all four men he faced.

Win:  Carr (4-3).

Save:  Nolan Santos (3).

Opposition standout:  Tre Richardson was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk.

Record:  Cedar Rapids is 21-21, tied for second with Peoria and Quad Cities, 4.5 games behind Wisconsin.

FORT MYERS MIGHTY MUSSELS 5, JUPITER HAMMERHEADS 4 IN JUPITER (10 INNINGS)

Jupiter scored three in the eighth to tie it 4-4, but Jay Thomason delivered an RBI single in the tenth to win it.

Multi-hit games:  Khadim Diaw was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Kaelen Culpepper was 2-for-5 with a double.  Thomason was 2-for-5.

A notoriously bad hitter, even for a pitcher, Bob Buhl had a lifetime average of .089 and went the entire 1962 season without getting a hit (0-for-70).  Oddly, he equaled his career high in walks that year with six, which goes to show something or other.

Kevin Cooney was an eleventh round draft choice of the Twins in 1972.  He pitched in the Twins’ organization for two seasons, then a shoulder injury ended his playing career.  He then became a college baseball coach.  He was the head coach at Montclair State from 1984-1987 and at Florida Atlantic from 1988-2008.

Columbus had leads of 6-0, 9-1, and 11-3 before St. Paul scored four in the eighth and one in the ninth.
