That Ol’ Black Magic

As the Nation knows (since I've repeatedly mentioned, so as to draw more sympathy -- thanks so very much you unsympathetic cads!), I am on the road to recovery after shoulder surgery. One consequence: I've been trapped at home, unable to drive, limited in terms of activities. mrsS thinks I should spend all day doing financial aid forms. I think differently.

yesterday was the Girl's Sweet Sixteenth birthday. We are celebrating this weekend, but I thought I would try to make one of her favorites for dinner. Those of you with teenage daughters can predict what happened next -- she wanted nothing to do with what I made, and retreated to her room, "not feeling well." Alas. At least her brother, The Boy, called her last night from the Alma Mater to wish her HBD. Good boy. That apparently cheered her right up -- wonders will never cease.

Aaaanyway, I made black beans last night, for black bean tacos. I ate them, and they were delicious. And, truth be told, I made them as much for me as for her. Yea, I'm that kind of dad.

Pint-Sized Reviews: Traquair House Jacobite Ale

Wow. It has been six months since my last review. I almost feel guilty.

But not guilty enough to keep from telling you all how awesome Traquair House is as a brewery. According to the website,

The brewery currently produces around 600 - 700 barrels per annum. (200,000 bottles and the remainder draught) Brewing takes place all year round with the exception of August. The brewery expanded its premises in 1993 but continues to ferment its total production in the original oak vessels. At present there is room to increase production by a further 20% but there are no plans to expand beyond this as it is intended to retain brewing in the original style and premises.

I'm pretty sure that I sold this line at the old basement as well, in a review of the utterly awesome Traquair House Ale (if you see this in your local bottle shop, BUY IT!!!).

Today, I'm moving on to taunt, err, regale you with another bottle of awesomeness (and I don't mean donkey-sauce awesome, I mean reality awesome) from Traquair House: the Jacobite Ale "wee heavy" flavored ale.

Julian Bream: Recuerdos de la Alhambra

I loves me some classical guitar. I've mentioned this before, but one of the formative cultural experiences of my childhood was going to the then-pretty-new Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis to see Julian Bream (it had to have been 1974 or 1975). brotherS and I sat in the nosebleed seats, separate from our parents, as they were unable to get four tickets together. We dressed up in our Sunday best for the show and were warned on pain-of-death not to so much as cough. And we went out to a real Chinese restaurant (i.e., silverwear and china dishes, not plastic and styrofoam) beforehand. Also, Julian Bream and I share a birthdate, so that's cool too.
