Half-Baked Hall: 2008

2004 Results!

Roberto Alomar: 90%
Barry Larkin: 90%
Edgar Martinez: 90%

Welcome!  In the real world, Edgar took a lot longer to get in. We had the decency to not make him wait here.

Nobody else even got one vote. Fred McGriff, who many a BBWAA voter has agonized over, got completely shut out. Also getting shut out were Appier, Burks, and Ventura.

Holy pitchers!

  • Frank Thomas (27%, 15 Votes)

Half-Baked Hall: 2004

We have two new members of the Half-Baked Hall!

Bert Blyleven: 100%
Gary Carter: 88%

We also have one player who will be kept on for a Veteran's ballot.

Willie Randolph: 44%

Meanwhile, Pedro Guerrero garnered one vote. He was a damn fine hitter. Too bad he was an absolute butcher in the field.  Jesse Barfield, Jack Clark, Brian Downing, and Carney Lansford all got shut out.

June 5, 2019: Homer Contest

I wanted to see if people were interested in making the homer prediction contest a daily thing. After all, you guys have spookied a ton of homers this year; let's try to translate that to bragging rights.

I can keep track of stats. But I'm thinking it would go like this:

  1. You can make your prediction at any time prior to the homer happening. In other words, you can make your prediction before game time or during the game if you want to wait until you get that Spooky feeling. Obviously, if you make the prediction before game time, you get more plate appearances for your guess to be correct.
  2. You can predict more than one player will homer, but you only get points if you get all of them correct.
  3. Guess 1 player correct: 1 point
  4. Guess 2 players correct (can be same player): 5 points
  5. Guess 3 players correct (can be combo of same player/different players): 10 points

So far both Twayn and yours truly would have one point under this system.

Season Long Homer Contest?

  • I might play, but whatever (85%, 11 Votes)
  • Sure! (8%, 1 Votes)
  • Only if I can pick Adrianza every game (8%, 1 Votes)
  • Pass (0%, 0 Votes)

Half-Baked Hall: 1992

Eddie Murray and Ryne Sandberg breeze into the half-baked hall with 100% of the vote.

Otherwise there was no suspense. Valenzuela netted two votes and Greg Gagne landed one.  Brett Butler got zero and real Hall of Famer Lee Smith got exactly zero votes. It appears the save statistic does not impress this group.

In 1992, it was mostly good hitters that retired. But there's one pitcher on the ballot you might want to circle.

Who's joining Ross Barnes?

  • Bert Blyleven (42%, 16 Votes)
  • Gary Carter (37%, 14 Votes)
  • Willie Randolph (18%, 7 Votes)
  • Pedro Guerrero (3%, 1 Votes)
  • Jesse Barfield (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Jack Clark (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Brian Downing (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Carney Lansford (0%, 0 Votes)
  • None of them! (0%, 0 Votes)

Former Twin Al Newman had 2.5 WAR. Also, John Moses, who had a solid year for the Twins in 1988, finished his career with negative 3.4 WAR.

Half-Baked Hall: 1997

Steve Carlton (93%) is your lone Half-Baked Hall entrant from 1988. Despite stuffing the ballot box, CarterHayes was unable to get anyone else in, though a few players will come back at a later time.

Graig Nettles: 71%
Ted Simmons: 57%
Don Sutton: 43%

Hall-of-Famer Bruce Sutter (5 votes) is permanently dumped, as are Ron Guidry (2 votes), Dave Concepcion (1 vote), and Jose Cruz (0 votes).

FMD — Unnecessary Parentheses

I added a new tag to today's music video as this is something that has always bothered me with song titles. Today's song is a perfect example:

Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old).

This just burns me. The song isn't about being "Much Too Young."  The singer wants to be young and feel young. No, the theme of the song is that he feels old. If you're going to use parentheses, it should probably be (Much Too Young To Feel) This Damn Old. But better yet, we should just get rid of the parentheses altogether.

What other examples do you have of stupid punctuation marks in song titles?
