Gigantes Recaps: Game Eleven

AGUILAS 7, GIGANTES 3 AT GIGANTES

Batting stars:  Jose Siri was 3-for-5 with two runs.  Ronald Guzman was 3-for-5.  Wilin Rosario was 1-for-2 with a home run.

Pitching stars:  Oddy Nunez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.  Marcos Molina pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Jose Valdez pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up two hits and a walk.  He struck out one.  Fernando Romero struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Rangel Ravelo was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  John Nogowski was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  Wilmer Difo was 3-for-5 with a triple.  Melky Cabrera was 2-for-5 with a double.  Juan Lagares was 2-for-6.

The game:  The Gigantes scored in the first inning on two singles and a ground out.  Aguilas tied it in the third when Difo tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly.  They went into the lead to stay with a four-run fourth.  Ravelo singled, Cabrera doubled, and Nogowski drove them both in with a single.  Francisco Pena singled to score Nogowski, a Difo single and a hit batsman loaded the bases, and Johan Camargo walked to force in a run.  It was 5-1 Aguilas through four.

Rosario homered in the fifth to cut it to 5-2.  Later in the inning, Siri singled, went to third on Guzman's single, and scored on a double steal of second and home to make it 5-3.  But Aguilas got the two runs back in the sixth when Victor Robles homered, Camargo singled, and Raelo had an RBI double.

It was 7-3 after six, and it was 7-3 after nine.  The Gigantes loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the inning.  They did not threaten to get back into the game again.

WP:  Wendolyn Bautista (1-1).  LP:  Dustin Crenshaw (0-2).  S:  None.

Notes:  Siri is batting .349.  Guzman is batting .340.  Kelvin Gutierrez was 1-for-4 and is batting .333.  Luis Marte was 0-for-1 and is batting .308.

Dustin Crenshaw started and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and no walks and striking out one.  Joe Van Meter started for Aguilas and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and one walk and striking out seven.

Jesus Reyes, Nunez, Jose A. Valdez, and Romero all have ERAs of zero.

There were 28 hits in the game, 17 by Aguilas.  The teams combined to strand 21, 13 of them by Aguilas.

Record:  The Gigantes are 6-5, in third place, a half-game behind first place Este.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Licey for a doubleheader today.

Gigantes Recaps: Games Nine and Ten

Shorter recaps today.

GIGANTES 3, AGUILAS 1 AT AGUILAS

Saturday

The Gigantes scored two in the ninth to break a 1-1 tie.  Steven Souza had an RBI single to break the tie and Carlos Peguero doubled home an insurance run.  Richard Urena was 2-for-3 with a home run.  Richelson Pena pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and no walks and striking out one.

GIGANTES 6, ESTRELLAS 1 AT ESTRELLAS

Sunday

The Gigantes scored three in the first and two in the second to take a 5-1 lead.  Ronald Guzman had a home run in the first to put the Gigantes in front, then hit a two-run homer in the second.  It was essentially a bullpen game for the Gigantes, as they used seven pitchers.  Rogelio Armenteros pitched the longest, 2.1 innings, and gave up the only run.

Record:  The Gigantes are 6-4, in first place by percentage points over the Toros del Este.  The Toros have played sixteen games compared to ten for the Gigantes.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Aguilas tonight.

Gigantes Recaps: Game Eight

GIGANTES 9, CIBAO 3 AT GIGANTES

Batting stars:  Carlos Paulino was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs.  Jose Siri was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.  Carlos Peguero was 1-for-4 with a grand slam (his second homer) and a walk.  Juan Francisco was 1-for-3 with a home run, two walks, and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Miguel Del Pozo struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Jesus Reyes pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out one.  Jesus Liriano struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  Junior Garcia pitched a perfect inning.  Yefri Del Rosario pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

Opposition stars:  Joe Dunand was 2-for-2 with a double.  Otto Lopez was 2-for-3 with a double.  Gregory Polanco was 1-for-3 with a home run, his second.  Gilbert Lara was 1-for-3 with a home run.  Samuel Adames retired all seven men he faced, striking out three.

The game:  The Gigantes took care of things early, scoring seven runs in the first inning.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Peguero hit a grand slam to make it 4-0.  With two out, two singles and a strikeout/wild pitch loaded the bases again.  This time Siri hit a bases clearing double to make it 7-0.

Polanco homered in the second to make it 7-1.  Francisco homered in the fourth to make it 8-1 and Paulino homered in the fifth to make it 9-1.  Lara homered in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-2 and a sacrifice fly later in the inning cut it to 9-3, but that was it.

WP:  Reyes (1-0).  LP:  Josh Lowey (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Luis Jimenez was 1-for-1 and is batting 1.000.  Luis Marte was 1-for-4 and is batting .375.  Siri is batting .345.  Ronald Guzman was 1-for-4 and is batting .324.

Del Pozo, Reyes, Garcia, and Del Rosario each has an ERA of zero.

Marcos Molina started for the Gigantes but pitched just two innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk and striking out three.

Jose Lowey started for Escogido but did not get out of the first inning.  He went two-thirds of an inning, allowing seven runs on six hits and a walk and striking out two.

With a blowout game, Escogido substituted freely.  Only one player, outfielder Estevan Florial, played the whole game, and he moved from center to right.  Again, I don't know how big the rosters are, but Escogido used seventeen position players and six pitchers.  One of their pitchers was named Henry Henry, which I mention just because, well, his name is Henry Henry.

Record:  The Gigantes are 4-4, tied for second, two games out of first.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at Aguilas tonight.

Gigantes Recap: Game Seven

GIGANTES 1, ESCOGIDO 0 AT ESCOGIDO (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Ronald Guzman was 3-for-5.  Luis Marte was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Chris Ellis struck out seven in six shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.  Six relievers each pitched a perfect inning:  Miguel Del Pozo, Reymin Guduan, Wily Peralta, Juan Minaya, Randy Rosario, and Ramon Ramirez.

Opposition stars:  Denyi Reyes pitched five shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks and striking out two.  Escogido had only two hits in twelve innings.

The game:  While I still don't like the "start with a man on second" rule, this game is an argument for it, because no one might have ever scored otherwise.  They start that rule in the twelfth in this league.  Abiatal Avelino started at second, was bunted to third, and scored on an error for the game's only run.

WP:  Rosario (1-0).  LP:  Adonis Uceta (0-1).  S:  Ramirez.

Notes:  Guzman is batting .333.  Steven Souza was 1-for-5 and is batting .333.  Jose Siri was 0-for-5 and is batting .320.

All the pitchers the Gigantes used have ERAs of zero other than Guduan and Ramirez.

I don't know how big the rosters are in the Dominican League, but Escogido used 17 position players and 7 pitchers.  Not all at once, of course, but still.  The Gigantes used 12 position players and 7 pitchers.

Winning pitcher Randy Rosario is an ex-Twin, playing in their minor league system for several years.

Record:  The Gigantes are 3-4, in fifth place, two games out of first.

Next game:  The Gigantes host Escogido on Friday.

Gigantes Recaps: Games Five and Six

As we're catching up, the recaps will be shorter.  We hope to get back to full recaps tomorrow.

Sunday's game was rained out.

LICEY 8, GIGANTES 5 IN LICEY

Monday

Licey scored seven runs in the second inning.  Wellington Castillo hit a two-run homer in the inning.  The Gigantes were led by Richard Urena, who was 2-for-3 with a walk, and Jose Siri, who was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Starter Rogello Armenteros lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks and striking out one.

LICEY 4, GIGANTES 3 AT GIGANTES (10 INNINGS)

Tuesday

Yermin Mercedes hit a two-run homer in the top of the tenth.  Carlos Peguero hit a solo homer in the bottom of the tenth, but of course it was not enough.  Dustin Crenshaw started for the Gigantes and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks and striking out four.

Record:  The Gigantes are 2-4, in sixth (last) place, but just 2.5 games behind first-place Licey.  Due to rainouts, there are large differences in numbers of games played.  Licey has played just five games, while Escogido has played fifteen.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at Escogido tonight.

Gigantes Recap

The Gigantes game against Estrellas was rained out.  Rain has played havoc with the Dominican League schedule.  There are teams who have played as many as eight games, and teams who have played as few as three.  The Gigantes remain 2-2.  They are in third place, a half game behind the Toros del Este and the Tigres del Licey.  They were scheduled to play Licey tonight, but it appears that game has already been postponed.  Their next game will be Friday, when they host the Toros.

Gigantes Recap: Game Four

ESCOGIDO 3, GIGANTES 1 AT ESCOGIDO

Batting star:  Ronald Guzman was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Dustin Crenshaw struck out six in five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk.  Raynel Espinal pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.  Marcos Molina pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Joe Dunand was 2-for-3 with a double.  Denyi Reyes pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.

The game:  Escogido scored three in the first and that was all they needed.  Chas McCormick singled, stole second, and scored on a Cesar Puello single.  An error and a walk loaded the bases.  With one out, Julio Y. Rodriguez had an RBI single and Dunand hit a sacrifice fly, making it 3-0 Escogido.

The Gigantes had a man on second with one out in the first, a man on third with one out in the second, and a man on second with one out in the sixth, but did not score.  They finally got on the board in the ninth.  Guzman and Rafael Lantigua started the inning with singles, bringing the tying run to the plate.  A ground out and a sacrifice fly brought home one run, but they also made two outs, and a strikeout ended the game.

WP:  Franklyn Kilome (1-0).  LP:  Crenshaw (0-1).  S:  Steven Wilson (1).

Notes:  Lantigua is batting 1.000.  Abiatal Avelino was 0-for-3 and is batting .417.  Guzman is batting .375.  Carlos Peguero is batting .333.

Espinal has an ERA of zero.  Randy Rosario pitched a third of an inning without giving up a run and has an ERA of zero.  Yunior Marte retired both men he faced and has an ERA of zero.

Gigantes manager Luis Urueta was ejected in the seventh inning.  He was thrown out by the first base umpire following a walk.  I don't know what the call was that prompted him to get tossed.

The Gigantes were 0-for-8 with men in scoring position.  Escogido was not that much better at 2-for-11.

Record:  The Gigantes are 2-2, tied for fourth with Escogido.  The Toros del Este remain in first place, but are still just 1-0 due to rainouts.

Next game:  Following an off day, the Gigantes host Licey on Friday.

Gigantes Recap: Game Three

GIGANTES 9, AGUILAS 8 AT GIGANTES (12 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Jose Siri was 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Abiatal Avelino was 2-for-5 with two walks and two RBIs.  Carlos Peguero was 2-for-5 with a walk.  Oneil Cruz was 2-for-5.  Richard Urena was 2-for-6 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Tiago Da Silva struck out three in three innings of relief, giving up one run on one hit and one walk.  Carlos Ramirez struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.  Domingo Tapia struck out two in a perfect inning.  Ramon Ramirez pitched a scoreless inning despite giving up a hit and two walks.  He struck out one.  Wily Peralta pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out one.  Yerry De Los Santos struck out all three men he faced.

Opposition stars:  Victor Robles was 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk, and two RBIs.  John Nogowski was 3-for-6 with three RBIs.  Deivy Grullon was 2-for-4.  Wilmer Difo was 2-for-5 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Juan Lagares was 2-for-6.

The game:  Robles homered leading off the game to put Aguilas up 1-0.  The Gigantes took the lead with two in the bottom of the first.  Siri doubled and a pair of walks loaded the bases.  Juan Francisco then delivered a two-run single to make it 2-1 Gigantes.

It went to 4-1 in the second.  Siri walked and scored on an error which sent Ronald Guzman all the way to third.  A wild pitch scored Guzman.  Aguilas got back into it in the third.  Edmundo Sosa doubled and scored on a two-out single-plus-error by Lagares.  Melky Cabrera then delivered an RBI single to make it 4-3.  Aguilas tied it in the fourth.  Difo doubled, went to third on Grullon's single, and scored on a double play.

The Gigantes took the lead back in the fifth.  With one out Peguero and Urena singled and a hit batsman loaded the bases.  Curz and Siri each had an RBI single to make it 6-4 Gigantes.  Each team scored once in the seventh, bringing the score to 7-5.

Aguilas went back in front in the eighth.  Singles by Rodriguez, Difo, and Grullon loaded the bases.  With one out Robles had an RBI single and Nogowski had a two-run single, making the score 8-6 Aguilas.  The first two Gigantes were retired in the ninth, but Gilberto Celestino singled, Ronald Guzman walked, and Avelino delivered a game-tying single to send the game to extra innings.

There was no scoring in the tenth or eleventh.  In the twelfth we started the "man on second" rule.  It did Aguilas no good, as all three of their batters struck out.  An intentional walk started the bottom of the inning.  A bunt/fielder's choice loaded the bases.  Peguero then hit a sacrifice fly to end the game.

WP:  De Los Santos (1-0).  LP:  Jose Adames (0-1).  S:  None.

Notes:  Avelino is batting .556.  Siri is batting .462.  Peguero is batting .364.  Celestino and Webster Rivas are each batting .333.  Guzman is batting .308.  Urena is batting .300.

The teams combined to use twenty-one pitchers.  Aguilas used twelve and the Gigantes used nine.  I still don't know for sure if there's a three-batter minimum, but there may be, because the only pitcher to face fewer than three batters did so to end the inning.

The Gigantes have gone to extra innings in each of the last three games.  I don't know what the major league record is, but three seems like it has to be pretty close.

The Gigantes again had a ton of scoring chances, going 5-for-18 with men in scoring position.  They stranded 18.

Record:  The Gigantes are 2-1, tied for second with the Tigres del Licey.  The Toros del Este are in first place, but due to rainouts have only played one game.  They are, of course, 1-0.

Next game:  The Gigantes are at Escogido tonight.
