Bee Yang – Kws Txhiaj
I don't know the name of this specific song, but kws txhiaj is the general term for song poetry, a traditional Hmong art form. Bee Yang learned song poetry while growing up in Laos before the Secret War there, and after immigrating to the United States, he performed regularly at Hmong New Year gatherings and other celebrations. His daughter, Kao Kalia Yang, is a noted author and he has sung at a number of events with her in recent years.

Bideew Bou Bess – My Feeling
I was looking for some Senegalese music and fell pretty hard for this.
The name Bideew Bou Bess means New Star in the Wolof language.
Paul Simon – Hurricane Eye
KA-BOOM!
I actually rather liked this album.
Jain – Makeba
I want a futuristic music armband...
This kind of stretches the definitions of "live", but whatever.
Angélique Kidjo – Once in a Lifetime
I feel like I just played this.

Baaba Maal – Ca et La
Following up on yesterday, I did also listen to West African music while in Senegal. I also took a dance class with live drumming, which was fantastic.
Youssou N'Dour and Baaba Maal were the Senegalese musicians I probably heard the most while I was there, so here's something from Maal. This one starts off pretty quiet, but give it until about the 2:30 mark when it picks up.

Again, part of me wants to hate this band, but I just keep coming back for more.

A big shout out to NBB for his guest week. Thanks for shaking things up. Here's another cut from the world music scene. I had the opportunity to see this young man play in Lafayette this weekend. To say that his guitar is hypnotic may be the understatement of the year.
