FMD: 2-24-2012

I'm almost always checking out new music and cycling music onto and off of my player. But right now I've got a backlog of stuff downloaded but not imported or uploaded. The new baby and the need to finish Downton Abbey before my MiL takes it back with her to Glenwood has kept me from fixing that.

Also, my good friend from High School, West, is the primary member of A Whisper in the Noise (like Reznor in NIN or David Tibet in C93). I've probably seen him less than a dozen times since graduation and maybe only once since 2003. Apparently they're big in Germany. His Their new video just showed up on my FB. The video itself isn't that great, but I find the song quite cool. It reminds me less of Sigur Ros and more like Cinematic Orchestra, which is a good thing for me.

  4. This week, I've been going through old tapes of stuff I recorded off the radio when I was 11. Nostalgia is a funny thing. This is terrible music that I recorded, but I can remember the radio announcer lead ins like I heard them for the first time yesterday. It's been fun, even if I haven't found anything worth salvaging just yet.

    1. That's the thing about music. I can hear a song from the seventies (when I was in high school), know it's a terrible song, and still enjoy hearing it again.

  6. Took my buddy to the Atmosphere show at First Ave on Wednesday for his birthday. A good time was had by all, but between the 4 opening acts, the beers consumed while waiting for the headliner and the contact high, yesterday was pretty rough going. 32 is not old, 32 is not old, 32 is....old?

    1. I like the cover.

I like the concept for the video, too, but it seems like the director just learned jump cuts, or overestimated the power he could get from them. That got irritating.

        1. This is... unsurprising. They were a pop-punk group in the early 2000's. They had a low level hit with 'Right Now'. One of my friends was a big fan.

  7. 1. Jimi Hendrix “Catfish Blues” Blues*
    2. Jóhann Jóhannsson “Theme” ...And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees
    3. Erykah Badu “Searching” Live

    9. Luomo “Class” Vocalcity
    T. Bonny Billy & The Picket Line “Ohio River Boat Song” Funtown Comedown

    B. KMFDM “Trust”* Nihil

    *Notes:
    1. Is this still in print? I have Jimi's three studio albums, two concert records, greatest hits, and a few compilations. I prefer this to all of them. I think Jimi was his best when he was taking more traditional blues and adding his guitar to it.

    4. "Out of the depths, you have called me, O Lord..." Choral with Organ and Percussion. Each syllable has the same length

    6. An Elite Gymnastics digital 12". Like most of their other releases, it can be found for free on < ahref="http://elitegymnastics.tumblr.com/tagged/RELEASES">their website. "This track is a house tempo edit of Rusko x Caribou." It's dubsteppier than the rest of their output, perhaps due to the Rusko.

    B. By far my favorite KMFDM track. It has everything that I've liked in their music in it and none of the stuff I don't like.

    1. Listened to "Trust"...it was very, uhm, I don't know. I can't think of anything that it reminded me of - at least not in my collection.

      1. Then you're missing out on a lot of mid 90's industrial!
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Ministry, Gravity Kills, Einstürzende Neubauten,
Nine Inch Nails (first album), Front 242, Meat Beat Manifesto...

          1. Can't say I ever got into either of these.
I cheated and looked at the Wax Trax catalog to get Front 242 and MBM.
I listened to MBM more in their late 90's big-beat style.
Gravity Kills is a lot crappier than the rest of the list.
And Einstürzende Neubauten was a bit more than the rest of the list.

I bought Nihil because KMFDM was going to play Edgefest, but they didn't perform due to the risk of torrential rains ruining their equipment. "Trust" wasn't even a single, but it's really the only track from the album that's stuck with me. XTORT was better, but then they broke up and reformed as MDFMK and then again as KMFDM, and they released an album without a five-letter title, and I just lost track of what happened to them. If someone told me that they were making great music again or absolute crap, I'd believe them, but my guess would be something in the middle, like NIHIL.

Still, they have my favorite T-Shirts ever (not that I own one), and a longstanding dream of mine was to find kid-sized KMFDM tees (or even onesies).

            1. PWEI was pretty great, but definitely a bit different than the rest of the stuff. Skinny Puppy borders on too dark for me; I'd usually just rather listen to Ministry problem.

I'm surprised you like NIHIL more than XTORT. I definitely prefer the former, though quite a few songs from XTORT ("Power", "Son of a Gun") stuck with me quite a bit. The last two KMFDM albums before they broke up, the one with five symbols for the title and ADIOS are both great. The MDFMK album was pretty good. The KMFDM stuff after they reformed wasn't all that interesting to me. Their last album was named WTF!?, I find that somewhat saddening.

          2. Ogre from Skinny Puppy contributed a couple of songs to the Descent 2 soundtrack. I remember thinking that was pretty awesome, since I liked both of those things.
