Minor Details: Games of 5/20

A terrible, horrible, no good, awful day in the minors.  Only the Red Wings kept it close.  Two teams made four errors.

GWINNETT 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER

Batting starWilkin Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching starsLuke French gave up two runs on six hits and a walk in 5.1 innings.  Matt Maloney worked three shutout innings, allowing only one hit.

Opposition stars:  Ernesto Mejia was 2-for-4 with a double.  Stefan Gartrell hit a home run.  Todd Redmond pitched seven strong innings, giving up a run on five hits.

Key inning:  The first.  With two out, Gartrell homered and Mejia and Drew Sutton hit back-to-back doubles to give the Braves a 2-0 lead.  The Red Wings bounced back with a Clete Thomas double and an RBI single by Ramirez.  There was no more scoring in the game.

READING 10, NEW BRITAIN 4 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting starsDeibinson Romero was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Evan Bigley was 2-for-5.

Pitching starBlake Martin went 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Steven Lerud was 3-for-4 with a double.  Darin Ruf was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.  Brandon Tripp was 2-for-3 with two walks.

Key inning:  The third.  Trailing 3-0, the Rock Cats scored twice without getting a hit.  A hit batsman, two walks, an error, and an infield out plated the runs.  The Phillies got the runs right back in the bottom of the inning on an error and Ruf’s two run homer.  The score was never close again.

Other:  The teams combined for six errors, with New Britain making four of them.

BREVARD COUNTY 13, FORT MYERS 2 IN BREVARD COUNTY

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz and Oswaldo Arcia each doubled, with Ortiz scoring once and Arcia driving in one.

Pitching star:  Ricky Bowen worked a perfect inning, striking out two.

Opposition stars:  Shea Vucinich was 3-for-3 with a double and a homer, scoring three times and driving in three.  Scott Krieger was 2-for-4 with a double and a homer, driving in four.  T. J. Mittelstaedt hit a three run homer.

Key inning:  The sixth.  Leading 4-2, the Manatees unleashed a nine run barrage.  The inning featured four singles, two doubles, an error, and a pair of three run homers, one by Mittelstaedt and one by Vucinich.

BURLINGTON 12, BELOIT 0 IN BURLINGTON

Batting starJaDamion Williams was 2-for-4.

Pitching star:  None.

Opposition stars:  B. A. Vollmuth was 3-for-4 with a double.  Chih Fang Pan was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.  Drew Granier struck out nine in 6.2 innings, giving up three hits and two walks.

Key inning:  The third.  Already ahead 3-0, the Bees scored four times to put the game away.  The runs scored on an error, two doubles, and three singles.

Other:  The Snappers made four errors.
