2012 Game Logs: Game 66 Twins @ Pirates

Scott "Possibly Maybe A Future All-Star" Diamond

versus

Kevin "Probably Never An All-Star" Correia

In the weeks approaching the trading deadline I am going to take a look at negotiations that Terry Ryan will be taking part in an attempt to make the Twins better for the future. This week, Terry Ryan makes a stop in Vegas.

Next week: Trade talks heat up and Terry Ryan looks for shop credit.

  1. I was so excited about the Pirates feed (I've never heard it), but wow...endless ERA talk, plenty of focus on "blue collar guys who get Gold Gloves the right way," "They're probably the most vanilla middle infielders in the league, but they make all the routine plays, which is all you're looking for..."

I think their analysis dates back to their last winning season.

  2. "Ron Gardenhire...how long as he been at the helm? I don't know, but he replaced Tom Kelly, and produced back-to-back division titles in 2009 and 2010..."

        1. And last night Sutcliffe was chiding his broadcast mates with watching the NBA or summat while he was Preparing for the Yankees game. As if. Another hilarity: Jeter comes up with the bases loaded and they remark that he has one career grand slam. And immediately they showed it from about ten years ago. Really? You have that ready to go in case he gets up with the bases loaded?

          1. Wow. No surprise there, except for the part where Jeter has only one. I'm as much a fan of his as you are, but would have given him, I dunno, at least eight or ten.

            1. He's batted first or second for 89.5% of his career PAs, so I'm guessing he's just not had many chances. Yep, just 288 out of 11,460 PAs have been with the bases loaded. I wonder how that compares overall. His percentage is higher than Mauer's, so I can only assume they both suck with the bases loaded.

      1. These guys aren't irritating in a loud way, but quietly, they're putting themselves in the running for the worst duo I've encountered.

  3. Come on, the Pirates are the second-worst team in runs/game: 3.42. They're going to get that in the first two innings.

  4. The FSN feed tried to highlight Doumit's Pittsburgh career and showed just TWO plays for his entire career despite showing each from multiple camera angles. Seriously, couldn't find any other plays to splice into that montage?

  5. WOOOOOO, YA AIN'T SPOILIN' DOUMIT'S RETURN, ARE YA?!?!?!

"He got hurt a lot, but he's a gamer, a guy you want as a teammate."
"A guy who wants to win."

  6. Dick, I think the Twins stuck with Dozier because 1) they suck 2) they have no shortstops.

    1. Complete the limerick:

The once was a GM named Ryan
Who had a young shortstop named Brian
      "We're stuck!" posted Sean
      "Dozie's cool" answered Ron

  7. I recently switched from cable to the dish. As a result I will now be able to watch Indians/Twins games on tv. Unfortunately, Buffalo is also a local market of Pittsburgh.

    1. one would think Toronto would be in the home market of Buffalo, not Pittsburgh.

      1. Mets/Yankees/Pirates/Indians all claim Buffalo as a local market Interestingly enough, I can watch Jays games on mlb.tv no problem.

  8. Alaskan Amber at Casa de Leche tonight. It's not a flashy beer, but it does all the little things right and passes the taste tests, which is really all you want from a beer. When did I realize Alaskan Amber was better than Michelob Amber Bock? I don't know, but I've had more of it than Amber Bock since at least 2011.

        1. Family bidness, I thought of you but I didn't have a minute to call mine. We flew in, rented an Explorer, filled it with stuff and drove home. Phoenix to Omaha in 2 days, now that's fun.

          1. Phoenix to Omaha in 2 days, now that's fun.

Add a raccoon and a one-eyed lion and you have a Disney blockbuster.

  9. Dick/Bert (I don't remember which) said the Pirates had traded away previous cornerstone players. Except, they haven't had any since 1993. Kendall might be close, but that's about it. Brian Giles was good, but he was traded to the Pirates.

    1. I get the feeling that both of those guys are constantly surprised when someone mentions what year it is. In fairness, I get a bit of that with baseball players. The other day when we were facing Soriano, I had it in my head that he was still a young player. Dude's in his fourteenth season.

    1. I don't know of another official site that makes errors with more frequency than twinsbaseball.com. Every time I go there, I spot one within a minute or two.

  10. Rejected Beatles lyrics:

Blackburn singing in the dead of night
Lucy with this guy, Scott Diamond
Bang bang Maxwell's Willinghammer went down upon her head

        1. Let me take you down, cause I'm going to Target Field.
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about.
          Target Field forever.

        1. <Zoidberg Voice>
Yay! My knowledge of two Beatles songs finally pays off!

    1. Just seeing this now. Here's my contribution:

Loss, loss loss, loss loss loss loss, loss loss loss loss, hey Plouffe. Loss, loss loss, loss loss loss loss...

  11. What up, all? Looks like I didn't miss anything good. I assume Thome hit a mammoth 490-foot blast for the Pirates.

    1. In short, one of Root Sports's Tips for Winning was "Spoil Doumit's Homecoming." Doumit proved the tip-writers geniuses by striking out to end the inning with the bases loaded.

      1. I was watching the 4ltr earlier today and ALL they could talk about was Doumit's return to Pittsburgh. It was so damned annoying.

  12. Dick offended at the Rockies' 14-man pitching staff. The Twins' 13-man stuff was completely normal.

  13. BOO HOO, Dick. Those poor overworked AL managers who might have to deal with an interleague series in both April and September.

    1. I still dont understand why there will be Interleague throughout the entire schedule next year. Why cant they just do the 3-week Interleague play they do now.

        1. You still could, if you don't mind having at least two teams at any time being off.

        2. there will be 15 in each league when the Astros move to the AL. 15 AL teams play 15 NL teams.

          What am I missing?

          1. If there isn't interleague play throughout the season, then one team in each league will need to be off for each series. Unless they try three-team baseball.

          2. Because when AL teams only play AL teams, there will be an odd man out. This would require sitting out at least two teams every day. It might be possible without lengthening the schedule too much, but then you'd end up with a scheduling nightmare. It would be lots of odd length series and probably lots of travel for the teams.

            1. ahhh. it makes sense now.

how about just getting rid of interleague play for a while until the next round of expansion or contraction.

    2. Dick still whining about how difficult Gardy's job is having a pitcher bat twice.

      1. Still a fan of making DH/no-DH the choice of the home manager. Dick would still complain about there being too many options.

  14. I missed this in order to have a meeting with our HR director and agency head about a problem staff member. #winning

  15. Well, it was a tough game, but there'll be better games. We'll just have to settle for 122-40!
