Game 80 Recap: Minnesota Twins 6, Detroit Tigers 4

after jacking donger after donger over the weekend, the twins squeak by the tigers with a mere 13 singles (leaving 12 on base) for their fourth win in a row, and gardy's 900th total. the bullpen held up, though not without creating some drama, and the twins denied the tigers' 8th attempt at a .500 record.

the twins are now, by virtue of teh suck of the central, only eight games back from the sox. i have a very bad feeling that they'll go on their standard july tear and hold on to all of their chips at the deadline in a foolish and misguided attempt at contention, and then crash back to earth in august empty-handed. but that's just my opinion.

  1. Dear Hungry Joe -

After hearing Terry Ryan and Dave St. Peter speak at SABR, I'm reasonably confident that there is no winning streak in the world that could cause them to hold onto their chips. It's just about the offers.

          1. Seriously though, hilarious.

Also, you've shown me the error of my ways and I've decided to swear off all point giving.

Also, cherry picking bad moves doesn't mean the front office will make the particular bad move hungry joe was concerned about.

Also, I have trouble letting things go.

            1. All in good fun.

I cherry picked the Marquis move because that summed up my problems with the FO. "Starting pitching? We've got starting pitching. See?"

  2. Unfortunately, there aren't many chips to worry about.

I think Liriano will be traded but I would be surprised if they moved more than him.

      1. More like greasy crumbs at the bottom of the bag.
Selling liriano certainly could make sense. Maybe d-span. But morneau is all but unmoveable unless he goes on a huge tear. And even then, probably not unless the Twins eat salary. I am just hoping for a competitive finish from this team.

        1. here's a question: do you think the twins are shrewd enough to be giving burton save opportunities in an attempt to drive up his value?

          1. the dude is dirt cheap as-is. One would think that any GM worth his salt could do the math and figure out whether Burton would be worth a prospect or two for a rental.

    1. It's sad that the trade-able player you mention happens to also be a starter, which is our weakest spot. Addition by subtraction only works if you don't subtract too far.

      1. True, but "getting something for nothing"* is always usually a good deal.

Everything I've heard or read indicates that he likely won't be back here next year anyway. Better to move him now when you can still get something in return?

        *In a manner of speaking.

          1. And you said as much. You know what, they were in Pittsburg and the broadcast team was talking about the guys still on the Twins' roster who'd been there with the club during the last visit in 2006. It blew my mind to realize that he was one of the 3 (M & M boys being the others) who had been with the team for 6+ years; I forget how long he's been around. Perhaps becuase there's been so much up and down?
