  2. I feel like I've gotten some hipster cred back here...

    1. Sloop John B - The Beach Boys
    2. My Girls - Animal Collective
    3. Baby Doll - Dan Wilson
    4. Southtown Girls - The Hold Steady
    5. This Year - The Mountain Goats

    7. 99 Luftballons - Nena
    8. Loaded - The Idle Hands
    9. Time Bomb - Rancid
    10. All I Have To Do Is Dream - The Everly Brothers
Bonus: Crimson And Clover - Tommy James And The Shondells
Double Bonus: On The Radio - Regina Spektor

    1. I've been listening to Pet Sounds pretty much non-stop since I got it for Father's Day, so it worked out that this popped up. I've been meaning to put it back-to-back with Sargent Pepper's afterwards, but I haven't gotten around to it yet, as it's been so satisfying on its own.
    4. This is the first Hold Steady song I have any memory of hearing, and I'm pretty sure I arrived at that particular party a few years late. Might actually still be my favorite of theirs.
    6. When I lived in DC and traveled to MN all the time I had a pretty solid connection to this song. Especially given some of my brutal travel experiences.
    8. I've probably said it before, but this is my favorite indie local track of all time, and possibly my favorite local track of all time, even among the big ones. It makes the list, that's for sure.
Double Bonus: It took me a while to type up this list, and "Crimson and Clover" turned over to "On The Radio" which is just an awesome song. I appreciate the heck out of Spektor's experimentation, but sometimes she doesn't put the polish she needs to on her songs. "On The Radio" is a perfect example of what her music can be when it's cleaned up.

      1. I don't think it can touch "God Only Knows" but it is a strong #2. I didn't realize how many of the songs that I didn't know on that album are really really good.

  3. Enjoyed the Alabama Shakes show last night, but I have never seen a band engage less with their audience. We also had a psycho lady about five feet to my left. I bumped into Algonad before the start of the show and then bumped into a HS friend I hadn't seen in years. We chatted for about two minutes and the lady screams, "SHUT UP!" Nevermind the fact that she was just screaming like an idiot, "YEAHHHHHH!!" at odd times throughout the night and was so annoying that the people next to her left before the encore just to get away from her.

    1. Michael Franti & Spearhead - "Never Too Late" - Everyone Deserves Music
    2. Sufjan Stevens - "The Seer's Tower" - Illinois
    3. Mumford & Sons - "After the Storm" - Sigh No More
    4. Uncle Tupelo - "Shaky Ground" - March 16-20, 1992 [Bonus Tracks]
    5. The Who - "Magic Bus" - 20th Century Masters
    6. Gorillaz - "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead" - Demon Days
    7. Cloud Cult - "The Departure: Today We Give Ourselves to the Fire" - Light Chasers
    8. Guster - "Jesus On the Radio" - Keep It Together*
    9. Drive By Truckers - "Outfit" - Austin City Limits Music Festival: 2003
    10. Beyonce Knowles - "Listen" - Dreamgirls Soundtrack#
    B. The Lemonheads - "Mrs. Robinson" - It's A Shame About Ray

    * First line, "Five a.m., March 16 . . ." I wonder if it was March 16, 1992?
    # Wow, that tenth song doesn't really fit with the rest of the list.

  4. Yes, the woman at Alabama Shakes was REALLY annoying. It was like she was trying to belt it out like the lead singer, but it was an ultimate fail. I feel bad for the guys who were next to her. Overall, the music was great!

Today, Pandora was all over the place:
    1. Jah Roots - Good Highs
    2. BluePrint - Soul Music

    6. The Hold Steady - Chips Ahoy (live)
    7. Outkast - Rosa Parks
    8. Flobots - Stand Up
    9. The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
    10. MC Hammer - You Can't Touch This
    Stop - Hammer Time!

    1. I like your pandora. Especially from #4 on.

Also, I was sad you didn't take the "there was this guy just talking to his friends at the concert so I screamed at him" gag.

      1. I know. I lobbed that one right over the plate. Could have been a homerun. [Cut to me miming throwing a football.]

    10. Blind Guardian - "Another Stranger Me", A Twist in the Myth

Uhhhh, no stories from me other than a complaint about the iPod's inability to finish a randomized playlist without bizzarely jumping into an album, losing my place. I can get about 250 songs in, then I have to start over. Stupid Apple.

    1. Do you just go through your stuff in a big long randomized playlist? So, you listen to your entire music collection (or at least what you have on your iPod) over the course of several months? Or what?

...because a lot of metal songs are long, and 250 songs in would be like 15 months worth of music if played straight through, wouldn't it?

  6. .

Open Up and Bleed - Mika Vainio - Life (...It Eats You Up)
Natures Mortes - Georg Friedrich Haas - Donaueschinger Musiktage 2003
Parsley Hero - The Goslings - Occasion

Metastaseis - Iannis Xenakis - Xenakis: Orchestral Works
    Stinkfist - Tool - Ænima
Geek Stink Breath - Green Day - Insomniac
Bone House - The Dead Weather - Horehound
Fried Eagle Mind - Sunn O))) & Boris - Altar

    * Finally, 7 tracks into this list and we get the first lyrics. Lots of long, loud, instrumentals here. First 6 songs average 12 minutes in length.

    * The first 2 minutes of 'Metastaseis' are in the running for my favorite 2 minutes of orchestral music.

    * I really like this list, it fits my mood this morning.

    5. Linds and I were watching a music video countdown show of the top 100 hooks of the last ten years. I have to believe that this is probably my number one (I think it was mid 70's on the show in question, which is stupid). Then again, Linds says I overrate this song to ridiculous levels (it's probably in my top 15-20 favorite songs ever).

    8. Haven't heard the album proper yet. I've never been a big Liars fan, but this song is great.

    1. #3! That's a fantastic song.

Also, despite not liking them all that much generally, I somehow managed to see that band like a half dozen time when I was in high school. Their live shows were not fantastic.

      1. Agreed on all counts. My friend was a fan, so every time they were at Sonshine, we'd end up finding our way there. I do enjoy three or four songs of theirs, but they were all around incredibly mediocre. I was always more of a Five Iron Frenzy guy, myself.

  10. Nearly 30 months ago, Sharon Van Etten had a Daytrotter session. "Give out" is still as affecting. Seems like she polished the lyrics a bit in the time between this and the album, but they're small changes.
