        1. All the hedge fund managers must be working late today, the expensive seats are especially empty.

  1. w00t! Baseball and cold beer. It's too bad that I have to teach stone lithography all day tomorrow otherwise I'd be up all night watching this game. Boo on employment.

    1. According to the 'scout' CC is playing with fire pitching into Lew's hot zone, and we're not talking in euphemisms here.

  2. It's a good thing Mariano Rivera isn't lurking in the pen because that would have caused Lew to ask out of the game.

  3. When do the Os start bunting on CC to piss him off? (Did the As ever try that on Verlander?)

  4. Even if he was told that every single pitch would be a slider in the dirt outside, I don't think Chris Davis could lay off.

    1. Not that I agree with the move, but Ibanez had a better Sep and there's platoon advantage. Ibanez also has no defensive value, so DH is good for him. I still doubt I'd bench A-Rod.

      1. Obviously the Yankees haven't had a whole lot of offense this series, but it just seems to me like Arod is getting an unfair amount of the blame (big surprise). Still, I can't imagine benching him. If you want Ibanez in there, I'm sure there's some other way to do it.

        1. Sure, you could bump Chavez and put Arod at 3rd. Arod also has a 1.2+ ops against Hammel, so it isn't like there is really a matchup problem.

  5. Wow, on that last angle it actually did look like it nicked the pole. The first three or four replays it didn't, but it sure seemed like the ball changed it's direction slightly. Still impossibly hard to tell.

    1. If it is that close, I can live with calling it foul. McClouth didn't seem to think it was fair, either.

      1. Right, put a gun to my head and I would call it foul. I was just surprised that the final angle suddenly made it look like it did hit the pole.

  6. In non-baseball news, in case this turns into a slaughter, the USA is taking on Antigua in a World Cup qualifier. It's on beIN sport. Some satellite packages have it, but I'll be using my favorite off-shore link aggregator. If you need a link, let me know, and I'll be cryptic about one.

    1. I was soooooooo tempted to buy a ticket to the game on Tuesday, but I'm glad I resisted the urge. It would have been difficult explaining why I needed to take Tuesday off and come in late on Wednesday on my 2nd and 3rd days at work.

    2. Your favorite forward has made a return to the starting lineup. 🙂 He's looked good for Seattle, fwiw.

  7. If the Cards lose tonight I have zero rooting interest left in the playoffs.

    1. I would like at least Washington (if LEW and JI

JIM THOME can't lead the comeback) to remain. Detroit, NY, StL, and SF are all so...predictable, perhaps. Old-hat?

  8. Uh oh, I just remembered Hardy's last bases-loaded at bat vs CC in the playoffs. Not good.

    1. He seems like a reasonable choice for this level of competition, but I don't think I'd like to see him going against, say, Mexico. Sure would be nice if the US could pound one of these minnows, though.

      1. In EJ's defense (ugh, I shuddered typing that), he had 5 combined caps (before today) from 2009-2012.

And I agree 100% re: beating up on the little teams. I vented to mc about how we can't stomp the crap out of an island with the combined population of Sioux City

  9. Obviously A-Rod's contract is a sunk cost to the Yankees at this point. The Twins should trade them Butera for Rodriguez with the Yankees picking up most of A-Rod's contract.

    1. That's the one where someone sells his soul so that the Washington team beats the Yankees, right?

      1. I refuse to pull for the Yankees, and as long as Cabrera's on the team I will despise the Tigers, so I'm all in on the National League from here out.

  10. Dick Stockton has been broadcasting baseball so long, he was the voice of Carlton Fisk's 1975 Game 6 World Series home run

    1. I don't have a strong rooting interest either way.

If they were still the 'Spos on the other hand...I'd want them to win the whole thing.

    2. I lived in St. Louis for 18 years. I have many friends that are Cardinal fans, even in Central Illinois where I live now. With that said, I'm totally rooting for the Nationals. I'm already sick of the "12 in 12" business. I don't begrudge them rooting for their team, I would too. However, I'm not joining in.

If the Cards do win, the final four will include the last 3 WS winners. Which means I need to cheer for the Tigers.

    3. The Cards need to win 100 games and either not make the playoffs or be swept in the first round before I forgive them for winning in 2006 an 83-78 record.

    4. I've had a family rooting interest in the Cards since I was a kid. I have really fond memories of the 67 and 68 World Series, but I had to root against them in 1987.

    1. No kidding. I hope Canada gets to the Hex because at least they have a nice field to play on.

  11. I was perusing the history of the Washington/Montreal franchise and discovered that this is the first year in their 44 year old history that they've finished 1st in their division(excluding 1994).

  12. "Not your prototypical lead-off hitter ... [he has a] high on-base percentage."

Yes, and it's incredibly sad managers haven't figured out that someone with a high OBP should be batting first.

    1. It's Morse's late inning walkup music. He doesn't use it early in the game. The crowd likes to sing along. I sure as hell would. That's all I know.

  13. I know that I would rather have had the Nats go through, but this is why I love baseball.

Every strike matters. No waiting out the clock.

    1. "You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." - Earl Weaver

  14. Dear Nationals,
This is why you don't let Teddy win the freaking race! You have brought a mountainous curse against your franchise.
    Sincerely,
    AMR
