Minor Details: Games of 5/7

Another sweep by Twins affiliates!  Lots of free baseball for the Red Wings!  An excellent start by Jason Wheeler!

ROCHESTER 8, TOLEDO 7 IN TOLEDO (16 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Ray Olmedo was 3-for-7 with three doubles, scoring twice and driving in one.  Doug Bernier was 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBIs.  Joe Benson was 2-for-6 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  P. J. Walters struck out eight in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.  Shairon Martis struck out four in 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Caleb Theilbar struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Avisail Garcia was 4-for-8, scoring once and driving in one.  Ramon Cabrera was 3-for-3 with a walk.  Jordan Lennerton was 3-for-8 with a home run.

Key inning #1:  The ninth.  The Mud Hens trailed 3-2 when Lennerton led off the inning with a homer to tie the score.

Key inning #2:  The eleventh.  The score was tied at three.  Benson led off the top of the inning with a double and Eric Fryer walked.  Olmedo hit a one-out double to give the Red Wings the lead and a squeeze bunt by Bernier put Rochester up 5-3.  In the bottom of the inning, however, a pair of singles, an error, and a sacrifice fly scored two for Toledo and tied the game at five.

Key inning #3:  The sixteenth.  It was still 5-5.  Olmedo again hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Bernier.  With two out, Chris Colabello hit a two-run homer, his only hit of the game, to give the Red Wings an 8-5 lead.  Virgil Vasquez came on to pitch the bottom of the sixteenth and retired the first two batters.  A walk and three singles made the score 8-7 and put the tying run on third before Brad Davis struck out to end the game.

NEW BRITAIN 8, NEW HAMPSHIRE 5 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Batting stars:  Danny Santana was 3-for-5 with two doubles and scored twice.  Josmil Pinto was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Jonathan Goncalves was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three.

Pitching stars:  Bruce Pugh pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Aaron Thompson struck out one in a perfect ninth.

Opposition stars:  Brad Glenn was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Kevin Pillar was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Matt Wright allowed one run on four hits and no walks in four innings of relief.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Rock Cats trailed 4-3.  Adam Pettersen walked and Mark Sobolewski hit a two-run homer to put New Britain ahead 5-4.  The next two batters struck out, and it appeared that the rally had been killed.  Then, however, Santana doubled, Dan Rohlfing walked, and Goncalves hit a two-run double to make the score 7-4.

FORT MYERS 4, TAMPA 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in one.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler pitched seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walks while striking out five.  Zach Jones struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up only a walk.

Opposition stars:  Robert Refsnyder was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  John Brebbia gave up one run on a hit and a walk in three innings.

Key inning:  The fourth.  The Miracle got a walk, a single, and an error to load the bases with none out.  Matt Koch delivered a two-run single and a ground out scored another run to give Fort Myers a 3-0 lead.
