Minor Details: Games of 5/16

A walk-off grand slam for Byron Buxton!  A walk-off single for Ray Olmedo!  An excellent outing for Taylor Rogers!

ROCHESTER 6, DURHAM 5 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Chris Colabello was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, his eleventh.  Jeff Clement was 1-for-2 with two walks and a homer (his fourth), scoring twice.  Ray Olmedo was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Rafael Perez pitched a scoreless inning, walking two.

Opposition stars:  Brandon Guyer was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer.  Leslie Anderson was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Rich Thompson was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The Red Wings had lost a 4-0 lead and trailed 5-4.  A walk, a single, and another walk loaded the bases with none out.  Olmedo delivered a two-run single to win the game.

Other:  Samuel Deduno struck out eight in 6.1 innings, but gave up four runs on five hits and two walks.  In fairness, he had given up only two runs in the first six innings.  He left the game with one out and two on in the seventh, and both men on scored.

BOWIE 9, NEW BRITAIN 1 IN BOWIE

Batting star:  Deibinson Romero was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Bobby Lanigan pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Michael Tonkin walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Mike Wright struck out eight in six shutout innings, allowing only two hits and one walk.  Ty Kelly was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double, scoring twice and driving in five.  Xavier Avery was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring three times.

Key inning:  The first.  Avery led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Niuman Romero.  A single and a walk loaded the bases and a two-out single by Luis Martinez made it 2-0.  The Baysox added one in the second, two in the fourth, and four in the sixth to build a 9-0 lead before the lone Rock Cat tally came in the eighth.

Other:  Trevor May lasted only four innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks.

FORT MYERS 2, DUNEDIN 0 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Jonathan Murphy was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Angel Morales was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-1 with a walk and was twice hit by pitches.  He scored once.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers struck out eight in seven innings, giving up only five hits and one walk.  Cole Johnson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up no runs and no hits.  Corey Williams struck out one in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jesse Hernandez gave up two runs (one earned) on nine hits and no walks in five innings.  Jon Berti was 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The fifth.  The Miracle led 1-0.  With one out, Sano was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a throwing error, and scored on a sacrifice fly.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, BURLINGTON 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Michael Quesada was 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer, his first.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-5 with a grand slam, his sixth homer of the season.

Pitching stars:  Mason Melotakis pitched six innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk.  Tim Atherton struck out four in two innings, giving up two unearned runs on a hit and a walk.  Manuel Soliman walked one in a scoreless inning.  The Kernels made three errors.

Opposition stars:  Kyle Johnson was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Kurt Spomer struck out four in two innings, allowing only one hit.

Key inning:  The ninth.  The Kernels trailed 6-3.  A hit batsman, a double, and another hit batsman loaded the bases with one out.  Buxton then hit a grand slam to win the game.

  2. Miguel Sano was 1-for-1 with a walk and was twice hit by pitches.

    We'll see if anything comes of this the next time they play Dunedin.

    1. I was just going to comment that Sano seems to have gotten hit by quite a few pitches lately. I'm going to guess at least a few of them are intentional.
