Venezuelan View: Games of 12/5

Miguel Sulbaran did as well as he could do.  Aharon eggs Caracas on to victory.

CARACAS 5, ZULIA 3 IN ZULIA (11 INNINGS)

Twins:  Miguel Sulbaran (Zulia) retired the only man he faced.

Caracas:  Jesus Aguilar (Cleveland) was 3-for-5 with a walk, a double, and a home run (his thirteenth), driving in two.  Gerardo Parra (Arizona) was 2-for-5 with a walk and two doubles, scoring twice.  Armando Galarraga pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Zulia:  J. C. Linares was 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs.  Jose Pirela (Yankees) was 2-for-5 with two runs.  Alex Torres (Tampa Bay) struck out seven in 5.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks.

The game:  Linares singled in a run for  Zulia in the first.  It stayed 1-0 in the sixth, when Caracas tied it on a single by Aguilar.  Linares singled in two in the seventh to make it 3-1 Zulia, but a home run by Aguilar and an RBI single by Alex Gonzalez tied it at three in the eighth.  In the eleventh, Aharon Eggleston and Gonzalez each singled in runs to give Caracas a 5-3 lead, and this time Zulia could not come back.

MAGALLANES 7, LA GUAIRA 5 IN LA GUAIRA

Twins:  Deolis Guerra (Magallanes) pitched one inning, giving up one run on one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

Magallanes:  Eliezer Alfonzo was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his ninth.  Robinson Chirinos (Texas) was 3-for-4 with two doubles,  scoring twice and driving in one.  Sergio Perez struck out seven in six innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and three walks.

La Guaira:  Carlos Sanchez (White Sox) was 1-for-2 with three walks and a run.  Jamie Romak (Dodgers) was 1-for-5 with a home run, his third.  Edgmer Escalona (Baltimore) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  It was 1-1 through six.  In the seventh, Magallanes got an RBI double by Chirinos and an RBI single by Renny Osuna to take a 3-1 lead.  Alfonzo's three-run homer in the eighth made it 6-1.  It was 7-2 going to the bottom of the ninth.  Four singles and two sacrifice flies made it 7-5 and brought the tying run up to bat with two out.

LARA 5, MARGARITA 2 IN MARGARITA (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Lara:  Jairo Perez was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two RBIs.  Luis Jimenez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a three-run homer, his fifth.

Margarita:  Max Ramirez (Cincinnati) was 2-for-3 with a run.  Alberto Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his third.  Henry Sosa pitched five innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give Margarita a 2-0 lead.  It was all Lara after that.  Single runs in the fifth and sixth tied the game.  After the first two batters went out in the seventh, a single, a walk, and a three-run homer by Jimenez gave Lara a 5-2 advantage.  Margarita was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.

LARA 10, MARGARITA 5 IN LARA (GAME 2)

Margarita:  Edgar Duran (Philadelphia) was 2-for-3 with two walks and two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Manny Pina was 2-for-4.  Carlos Rivero was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.

Lara:  Mike Moustakas (Kansas City) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run, scoring three times and driving in two.  Andrew Lambo (Pittsburgh) was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in four.  Erasmo Ramirez (Seattle) pitched six innings, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Lara got four consecutive singles to start the fourth, scoring two runs to take a 3-1 lead.  Three singles and two errors produced three more runs in the sixth, and it appeared Lara was in control of the game.  Margarita came back in the seventh, getting a two-run double by Duran as part of a four-run inning that cut the Lara lead to 6-5.  Lara got the four runs back in the bottom of the inning, as Lambo hit a three-run double to put Lara back in control.

Random:  The first game was a makeup game, so I'm guessing that both games were actually played in Lara.

  1. Huh, I was expecting a bit more than that out of Sulbaran from your teaser, but what you said was completely true.
