Mexican Matchups: Games of 1/2

Day two of the playoffs.  Three-run homers are important.  Culiacan gets blanked.

MEXICALI 7, CULIACAN 0 IN MEXICALI

Twins:  Brad Boyer (Culiacan) was 0-for-3 with a walk.

Culiacan:  Ronnier Mustelier (Yankees) was 2-for-4.  Matt Bischoff (Baltimore) struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and no walks.

Mexicali:  Russell Branyan was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Gil Velazquez was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Terry Doyle pitched five innings, allowing one hit and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Chris Roberson tripled in a run in the third and Mexicali scored three in the fourth to up 4-0.  The fourth-inning runs scored on a Brad Snyder (Texas) RBI single, a ground out, and a Velazquez double.  Mexicali added three in the eighth.  Only once did Culiacan get a man to third base, in the second inning.

HERMOSILLO 5, GUASAVE 2 IN HERMOSILLO

Guasave:  Zelous Wheeler (Yankees) was 1-for-4 with a home run.  Jesus Cota was 1-for-4 with a run.

Hermosillo:  Yunesky Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer.  Jerry Owens was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Nathan Reed (Boston) struck out seven in six shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

The game:  Hermosillo got on the board in the third on an error.  That was the only score until the sixth, when Sanchez hit a two-out three-run homer to make the score 4-0.  Guasave never threatened to get back into the game.

NAVOJOA 9, LOS MOCHIS 2 IN NAVOJOA

Los Mochis:  Juan Carlos Gamboa (Mets) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, driving in one.  Jesus Arredondo (Dodgers) was 1-for-2 with a run.  Jake Fox (Mets) was 2-for-4.

Navojoa:  Luis Fonseca was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Wes Bankston was 1-for-2 with two walks and a three-run homer.  Salvador Robles struck out five in five innings, allowing an unearned run on six hits and two walks.

The game:  John Lindsey led off the second with a home run and Fonseca singled in a run in the third to put Navojoa up 2-0.  An error in the fourth cut the lead to 2-1, but Navojoa scored five in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  Fonseca doubled in two and Bankston hit a three-run homer.  Los Mochis did not score again until the ninth.
