Program Clean

I've had a week now to recover from the Marathon - did a lot of stretching/rolling my legs, light runs, and some laps in the pool. The usual pattern for my last five Halfs has been to sign up for the next race sometime in the week following the race.  I haven't yet, but am leaning toward a destination half or full.

Reflections on the marathon training:  it was tough doing the long runs in the cold, in the dark, in snow, in freezing rain, in cold wind, on snow, on ice, sometime with my running partners, sometimes alone, on fresh legs, on sore legs.

I noticed that my weight stayed relatively the same throughout the program. I figured I lost a bunch of body fat (my fingers look smaller), but built up a fair amount of new muscles in the legs.

A couple months back I was reading this book called Clean, by A. Junger.  Interesting read on its own (maybe a later post). He recommends a periodic purge of body toxins through a detox program.

I liked the idea, but decided to wait until done with the Marathon to try this out.  I'm going to embark on this program starting tomorrow, with the idea of clearing out the pipes, losing some extra pounds, and then start training for my next event.

The De-Tox Program at a glance:

Daily:  liquid meal for breakfast; solid food meal for lunch; liquid meal for dinner.

Follow their diet guidelines for everything I consume.

12-hour window from last meal of the day to the first meal of the next.

Drink water throughout the day (I kinda do this now).

Continue to train/cross-train.  Log weight, meal success, and activities on my charts.

Continue to read Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and chart progress (on page 17 today).  Continue with Russian language study ( a new divertimento of mine).  Век живи́!

  1. I've been interested in the detoxing, but I haven't put too much thought into it yet.

It was snowing at a decent clip when I went jogging yesterday, and with my recent facial hair practices, I got my first icebeard! It was pretty awesome. Also, some lady driving by rolled down her window and yelled, "Way to go!" to the weirdo jogging in the dark with blowing snow. As I've only been doing this about a month and a half now, I enjoyed the encouragement.

    1. I'm sure that there are good things about "detoxing", but the science is...not good.

the only liquid diet that is gonna clean you out is one that involves Golytely. I don't recommend it (unless you are getting a colonoscpy, which I highly recommend at age 50).

You might lose weight on a detox diet, because they're usually very low in calories.

But the idea that your body needs help getting rid of toxins has "no basis in human biology," says Frank Sacks, MD, of the Harvard School of Public Health. Your organs and immune system handle those duties, no matter what you eat.

  2. Footy practice again yesterday. We did a 4v4 scrimmage, and I did fairly well for being new to the sport. I earned a few points with the lads for charging down a clearance. I essentially blocked a punt at point-blank range with my chest. Holy Mauer, it hurt like the dickens. I'm glad I jumped into it, otherwise I would have blocked it with my face.
