  1. My miniature Schnauzer Otis turns 10 years old today. There were about 8 months in which circumstances required that I live in the same house with my then future ex-wife. While I had a lot of support from friends and family outside the house, it was the loneliest time of my life. Otis was a huge reason I got through it. We are both in a much better situation now.

In a lot of ways, I dislike the 10-years because it reminds me that he won't be around forever, but I'm not going to dwell on that.

    1. Our cat turned 13ish this year. We got her from the spca in Buffalo, and have since carted her across he country to New Mexico, Texas, and now to Louisiana. She's been through the best and worst parts of our lives for more than a decade. Here's to many more years of enjoying Otis.

  2. So I spent most of my day yesterday in St Paul on Summit Ave near the Governor's Residence.
That's a nice area of town.

  3. Wild Playoff Watch - Day Game Edition

Today at 2 PM Central. Game 2 in Chicago

I thought the Wild played with Chicago for a big portion of game 1, but Chicago buried their chances, while the Wild kept coming close. If the Wild start getting bounces past Crawford, they could steal a game on the road.

A more troubling note, the Wild penalty kill has been less than stellar in the last 3 games. If I'm Mike Yeo, I implore my guys to stay out of the box.

    1. The game is on the NBC mothership. I cant recall the last time the Wild had a game on network tv.

      1. Finally able to watch a game at home and it's gorgeous outside ... Such is life.

  4. Just dropped Runner daughter off at a rental car place where she and a couple others are making the drive to Ft. Wayne, IN for a week of training for her new job. I hope she has a little time to enjoy herself while she's there.

    1. I'm thinking fun in Fort Wayne Indiana is the two-for-one specials on margaritas at Chili's.

        1. Too bad the Mad Ants aren't still in season, she could see Nightmare Ant in person

    1. The complete beatdown of the Mavericks by the Bulls is kind of killing my excitement for this sports day, on top of it.

      1. The Bulls wish they were beating down a Western Conf. team. Because that would mean (a) they hadn't been eliminated and (b) finals!

        1. I couldn't make sense of your comment until I finally went back to my own comment. That's one heck of a weird mistake.

        2. But seriously. How can any NBA fan not enjoy watching the Spurs play? Best organization in sports.

          1. Yeah, I really don't understand what's so "boring" about a team that methodically takes the other team apart. I guess it's more exciting to watch teams with loud or controversial superstars? I dunno.

            1. Colorless Uniforms require colorful players.
I only really enjoyed the Sox when Ozzie was their manager.

This is adapted from a rule I had back at my old blog, which may predate the old basement.

    1. I noticed the image and thought, "R2D2? Neat!", but didn't manage to draw the connection between that and the date. That is nicely done.

    2. We ended up watching Empire and Jedi back-to-back after the first-communion guests left.
LBR sat on my head for at least half of Empire because I was too tired to give her any consequences.

  5. Interesting quote from Brian Dozier over at 1500 ESPN

Dozier suggested the preparation on the base paths is drastically different from a season ago.

"Tell you what, [Paul Molitor] is doing a heck of a job before games - him and Joe [Vavra] - dissecting pitchers, knowing what counts to steal on, their tendencies and all that kind of stuff. It's been night and day compared to last year," Dozier said.

    1. According to Gardy, even Colabello approached him about taking the running steal off the shift like Dozier did today. Gardy wasn't too sure about Colabello doing that, but he really appreciated that the players are more aware on the basepaths and looking at those kinds of possibilities.

      1. Smarts and guile are going to win the Twins some games this year.

I got thinking about Dozier and runs scored (he is now at 31) and it lead to me the 1996 season. I wonder if this season and that season will be similar. Good offense (Trevor Plouffe is Scott Stahoviak (116 OPS+that year)) , terrible pitching (Mike Pelfrey = Scott Aldred).

        1. Also, that team wasn't so great offensively. A team OPS+ of 97 and were 8th in the AL in runs scored. They were 2nd in the AL in hits and BA, which is why that team is remembered as one with a great offense, but it had little power (last in HRs) or patience (10th in BBs).

          1. What impressed me when I was researching the 1996 team a few weeks back was their defense. The good defenders were really good in 1996 (Becker, Knoblauch) and the players with shakier reputations were still in the plus column, including Matt Lawton who was +5 according to FanGraphs.

  6. I am the farthest from a Cristiano Ronaldo fan you'll find, but his goal today was a beauty.
