FMD: One More Week

The tracklist for the WGOM Summer Mixtapf will be ready on next Friday for your Independence Day celebrations.
I'm very, very disappointed in Can of Corn for making me listen to one of those songs he nominated. Am I wrong or is it awful?
This week it's just time to share your random lists.

    Notes:
    1. Buzzcocks coming to The Varsity Theater Sept 11, two days before Replacements gig. Tix on sale today. Speaking of the Replacements, on my to work I ride right by the Replacements "Let It Be House." I noticed yesterday that there is a for rent sign in front. I'm thinking of renting the place, have a big party before the Replacements show and charge $25 for people to go and recreate the album cover. Good idea?

    6. The Soundtrack of Our Lives is one of those bands that criminally most people don't know about. I think a lot of FMDers would like their stuff.

    9. Arguably one of the greatest GBV songs ever. I have three versions of this song on my I-pod with over 100 total listens among all three versions. This is a slower version, but the rockin' version has a slow build-up and then kicks into the main guitar part. At Rock the Garden, Robert Pollard timed his leg kick perfectly with the guitars. It's what makes GBV fans drool. In case you missed it, here is a story about a fan's 16 GBV concert experiences.

B1. Abbey Road is my "chill album" and this is the chillest song off that album.

  3. 1. Ha Ha Tonka “Made Example of” Death of a Decade
    2. Blondes “Business (John Roberts Remix)” Blondes
        a. Saltmarsh Sparrow “Song” (Cornell Essential Set)
    3. The Field “Black Sea” Cupid's Head
        b. Tennessee Warbler “Song Type A2” (The Warbler Guide)
    4. Sarah Neufeld “Tower” Hero Brother
    5. Aphex Twin “Bbydhyonchord” drukQs

        c. Northern Parula “Song Type C” (The Warbler Guide)
    6. Kelis “Floyd” Food
        d. Magnolia Warbler “Song and Calls” (Stokes Field Guide Bonus CD)
    7. The Bottle Rockets “Young Lovers in Town” The Brooklyn side
    8. Andy Stott “Intermittent” Passed Me By
    9. Current 93* “The Beautiful Dancing Dust” Black Ships Ate the Sky
    T. Johnny Cash “Delia's Gone”* Murder
    E. Robyn “Get Myself Together” Body Talk, Pt. 3

    *Notes:
    9. Vocals by Antony
    T. I think I have this song on my iPod twice, once from Murder, once from American Recordings.

  4. * Comeback Kid - Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
    * Better Version of Me - Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
    * Sex and Violence - Stone Temple Pilots - No. 4
    * Bikeage - Descendents - Milo Goes to College
    * Ain't it the Life - Foo Fighters - There is Nothing Left to Lose
    * Hare Krsna - Husker Du - Zen Arcade
    * ICA - Saltland - I Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us
    * Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus - The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
    * Still Light - The Knife - Silent Shout
    * Kiss Me on the Bus - The Replacements - Tim

Off to ABQ for a couple days of museums, zoos, and an EMA concert.

    1. I put Comeback Kid on the TouchTunes at a bar once. I have never gotten that negative a group reaction from anything I've played - not even when I put "In a Gadda Da Vida" on three times back to back. Even Antony Johnson's "Hope There's Someone" elicited more confusion than outright angst.

      1. I once played Björk's "Declare Independence" around lunchtime at whatever the big restaurant in Pequot Lakes is.
It was not that busy, but all of a sudden the soundsystem volume dropped by about half. I should have asked for my money back (I wouldn't have spent so much to barely [make you] hear the song!), but I was in a good mood.

  5. If you're referring to my #1 ... #notasnowflake.
If you're referring to my #3, then you're not wrong - it's not good (not "awful") but certainly nowhere near a 2014 Summer Top 3. I was a much younger man when I made that selection.
Even though I spent all of 8 minutes putting my selections together (and no minutes organizing their order), I stand by the remaining songs ("L's" & Robyn included).

    My random:

    1. Salt – Bad Suns*
    2. Waltz For Debby – Bill Evans
    3. Rolling In The Deep – Adele
    4. Chartreuse – Capital Cities
    5. Tainted Love – Soft Cell

    6. Little Talks – Of Monsters & Men
    7. Keep Ya Head Up – 2Pac
    8. Pumped Up Kicks – Foster The People**
    9. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – Arctic Monkeys
    10. I Really Want You – Arkestra One

    B. A Heavy Abacus – The Joy Formidable

*Appearing at 7th St Entry on July 9
** Heh – see comment RE song #3 above

    1. Since you're not going to defend "Pumped Up Kicks", allow me... it's a good song. It was fairly massively overplayed, but that didn't prevent me from enjoying it.

      1. I would like to point out that I put "Pumped Up Kicks" on my Summer 2011 mix, which was before it became overplayed. Indeed, I think I might have had it on the mix before it even touched Top 40 radio. One of the few times in my life when I've ever been on the leading edge of anything.

      2. I've misrepresented myself. I was pointing to the #3 summer song being by the same artist. "Coming Of Age" is a bit of an earworm for me, but it's not a "great" song* and overall, their new album doesn't hit as many high spots as their first release. However, I liked the band enough to see them at Target Center when last they were in town.

*Really though, I'm not sure which of my songs caused AMR pain.

            1. That one made my wife's summer mix. It won't make mine, but I don't hate it. As far as things I'm forced to hear on the radio, it's pretty far down the angst list.

              1. So there's my problem: I'm not comparing it to much more hatable stuff.
I mostly said it as a joke, a little ribbing on CoC. It's just jarring when I hear that compared to most of the rest of my stuff.

                1. Yes. There are two acceptable ratings: awesome and Pitbull.

"Am I Wrong?" is not Pitbull, and is therefore awesome.

                  1. But I can imagine a world where there's a "remix" featuring Pitbull, so I'm pre-assigning it onto his pile.
Same with "500 Miles" via his theoretical cover.

    2. Where does the Arctic Monkeys version of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" come from? I must hear it.

      1. Only in my head...the 9th song on my FMD template was "Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High" and I missed updating the artist.
I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – Arctic Monkeys The Pretenders

          1. Only in my head...
I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – Arctic Monkeys The Pretenders The Proclaimers

                    1. Actual covers of the song on Spotify:
                      MXPX
                      Steven Curtis Chapman (Really?)
                      Sun Rai
                      Kendra Morris

                    2. Steven Curtis Chapman (Really?)

I've actually heard that one (and the MXPX one, actually), it's off of his "All About Love" album. I think he changes the "get drunk" line.

        1. I think AM needs to cover this now. Make it happen Billy Smith!!

In my attempt to find the cover that does not exist, I did find this gem.

    3. Your #2 was pretty good. I'm ambivalent on #3, and I'm completely unmoved by Lykke Li's entire album.
Robyn/Röyksopp & Lydia picks are fantastic. Haven't noticed the Lorde on my listens through.
By the rules I established, every #1 absolutely goes on the mix, so...

      Ducks SelectShow
      1. Swap the Robyn/Röyksopp for my #1 (that was the first day I heard it and I much prefer it given a month to listen).

    10. Symphorce - "Towards the Light", Become Death

And a bonus for Papa Glenn: Spinal Tap - "Gimme Some Money"

  7. Grimes has a new song out!

It's... essentially a rejected Rihanna song (which is, of course, because that's precisely what it is). I'm not overly impressed.

    1. Every time somebody has a track from Nirvana's unplugged album on their list I have to listen to the whole thing. I guess that means three times today.

It's cool. There are few things in the world I like better than my 4-year-old singing along with "The Man Who Sold the World."

      1. Every time somebody has a track from Nirvana's unplugged album on their list I have to listen to the whole thing.

        Goodness - so much this.

  11. The Reich and Eno/Fripp numbers make for excellent bookends. The middle is truly random. A lovely little Tobin Sprout-sung ditty from Propeller. Well worth one minute and thirty-six seconds of your time.

(I also played the heck out of my brother's 45 of this when I was about 5 years old. Still sounds pretty cool today.)

  12. Hey Hungry Joe, hope you have fun Sunday Night.

      1. If AMR has figured out how to be in two places at the same time, I like to think hj could manage it as well.
