ROCHESTER 5, INDIANAPOLIS 3 IN ROCHESTER
Batting stars: Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his third. James Beresford was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once. Eric Farris was 2-for-3 with a run.
Pitching stars: Jason Wheeler pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in his AAA debut. A. J. Achter struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.
Opposition stars: Mel Rojas was 2-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one. Jose Tabata was 2-for-3 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. John Holdzkom struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.
The game: RBI singles by Pedro Florimon and Wilkin Ramirez gave Rochester a 2-0 lead in the second. Nevin Ashley's run-scoring double in the fourth tied the score at two. In the sixth, Farris led off with a single, Beresford followed with a double, and Pinto hit a three-run homer to give the Red Wings a 5-2 advantage. In the ninth, Indianapolis cut the lead to 5-3 and got men to second and third with two out, but Michael Tonkin came in to strike out Andrew Lambo and preserve the win.
Of note: Doug Bernier was 1-for-4. Florimon was 1-for-3 with a walk.
PORTLAND 1, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN NEW BRITAIN
Batting star: Stephen Wickens was 1-for-3.
Pitching stars: Daniel Turpen struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Mason Melotakis struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit. Alex Wimmers struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.
Opposition stars: Brian Johnson struck out twelve in seven innings, allowing one hit and three walks. Sean Coyle was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, driving in one. Blake Swihart was 3-for-4.
The game: The lone run came in the third. Shannon Wilkerson and Swihart opened the inning with singles and Coyle's sacrifice fly brought the run home. New Britain got one hit, a two-out single by Wickens in the third. The hit put men on first and second, the only time the Rock Cats had two men on base.
Of note: Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3 with a walk. Eddie Rosario was 0-for-4. Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4. Starter Adrian Salcedo, normally a reliever, pitched three innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
TAMPA 4, FORT MYERS 3 IN TAMPA
Batting stars: Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-2 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one. Levi Michael was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run. Mike Gonzales was 2-for-3 with a double.
Pitching stars: Tim Shibuya pitched seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Steven Gruver pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one walk.
Opposition stars: Danny Oh was 3-for-5 with a run. Greg Bird was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Brett Gerritse pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout.
The game: The game was scoreless for six innings. In the seventh, a walk, a double, and a fielder's choice put a run on the board for Tampa. Fort Myers tied it in the eighth on an RBI single by Adam Brett Walker II. In the ninth, Mejia singled in a run and Byron Buxton doubled in another to give the Miracle a 3-1 lead. It would be the Yankees who pulled off the miracle finish, though. A single, a walk, and a single loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly made it 3-2 with two down. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and Bird delivered a two-run single to end the game.
Of note: Buxton was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Nate Roberts was 0-for-4 with a walk. Walker II was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
CEDAR RAPIDS 5, BOWLING GREEN 4 IN BOWLING GREEN
Batting stars: Michael Quesada was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third. Bryan Haar was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, his thirteenth. Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Pitching stars: Brandon Bixler pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout. Dallas Gallant pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Julian Ridings was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk, scoring twice. Spencer Edwards was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks. German Marquez struck out seven in five innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits and a walk.
The game: Ridings hit a three-run homer in the second to give Bowling Green a 3-0 lead. Cedar Rapids came right back in the fourth, as Christensen singled in a run and Haar hit a three-run homer to give the Kernels a 4-3 lead. Quesada homered in the fourth to make it 5-3. The Hot Rods put men on second and third with one out in the fifth but did not score again until the seventh, when a walk, a double, and a ground out cut the margin to 5-4. Bowling Green had men on first and third with two out, but a fly ball ended the threat. The Hot Rods did not get a hit after that.
Of note: Ryan Walker was 0-for-5. Alex Swim was 1-for-4. Starter Ryan Eades pitched five innings, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
ELIZABETHTON 8, JOHNSON CITY 1 IN JOHNSON CITY
Batting stars: Jorge Fernandez was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in three. Max Murphy was 1-for-3 with a home run (his ninth) and two walks, scoring twice. Tyler Mautner was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Pitching stars: John Curtiss started, striking out four in three innings while giving up one run on four hits and a walk. Derrick Penilla struck out six in five shutout innings of relief, giving up five hits and no walks. Keaton Steele pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.
Opposition stars: Jose Gomez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once. Casey Turgeon was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Jose Godoy was 2-for-4.
The game: It was 1-1 after three, but Murphy led off the fourth with a home run and Fernandez doubled and scored later in the inning to give Elizabethton a 3-1 lead. The Twins then scored five in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Fernandez capped the inning with a two-run double. The inning also included two singles, two walks, a hit batsman, two wild pitches, and an error.
GCL RED SOX 5, GCL TWINS 3 AT TWINS
Batting star: Manuel Guzman was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.
Pitching stars: Onesimo Hernandez struck out nine in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. Callan Pearce pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.
Opposition stars: Javier Rodriguez pitched five shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks with three strikeouts. Ben Moore was 2-for-2 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice. Rafael Devers was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
The game: Gabriel Ojeda singled in a run in the first to put the Twins up 1-0. The Red Sox tied it in the second, but an RBI double by Ariel Montesino keyed a two-run second for the Twins to give them a 3-1 lead. That was the end of the Twins offense. Meanwhile, Devers singled in a run in the third to cut the lead to 3-2. It looked for a while like that lead might hold up, but in the sixth, Moore tripled and scored to tie it, a sacrifice fly put the Red Sox in the lead, and Trenton Kemp singled in an insurance run. The Twins got only one hit after that.
Of note: Dubal Baez was 1-for-4. Amaurys Minier was 0-for-3 with a walk. Rainis Silva was 0-for-4.
DSL PADRES 8, DSL TWINS 1 AT PADRES
Batting star: Gabriel A. Ynfante was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.
Pitching star: Jose Martinez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Opposition stars: Leudy Molina was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in three. Ronaldo Contreras was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Aurelio Perez was 3-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch, scoring once and driving in one.
The game: Ynfante doubled in a run in the third to give the Twins a 1-0 lead, but that was as good as it got. Contreras doubled in two in the fourth to put the Padres up 2-1 and they put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh. All five runs were unearned. The inning featured two singles, a triple, a stolen base, a walk, a hit batsman, two errors, and three wild pitches.
Of note: Emmanuel Morel was 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a run. Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-3 with a walk. Lewin Diaz was 0-for-3 with a walk.
