Venezuelan View: Games of October 15

Andy Burns Lara.  Minicozzi is on the Mark for Zulia.  Two dozen pitchers in one game in Magallanes.

MARGARITA 4, LARA 3 IN MARGARITA

Twins:  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-3 for Margarita.

Lara:  Carlos Rivero (Boston) was 3-for-4 with two home runs, his second and third.  Gabriel Noriega (Seattle) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run, driving in one.  Terry Doyle (Atlanta) struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and no walks.

Margarita:  Andy Burns (Toronto) was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs.  Alberto Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Eric Berger (Atlanta) pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  Burns singled in a run in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie.  Lara got one back in the ninth and had the bases loaded with two out.

ZULIA 5, CARACAS 4 IN CARACAS

Twins:  Ryan O'Rourke struck out the only batter he faced for Zulia.

Zulia:  Ali Castillo (Yankees) was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Mark Minicozzi (San Francisco) was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Wilfredo Boscan (Boston) struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and no walks.

Caracas:  Josh Whitesell was 0-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Boone Whiting (St. Louis) struck out five in 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks.

The game:  With Zulia trailing 3-2 after seven, Minicozzi hit a two-run homer to put them ahead 4-3.  Each team scored once in the ninth.  Caracas got the tying run on first with two out but could do no more.

ARAGUA 5, LA GUAIRA 3 IN ARAGUA

La Guaira:  Miguel Gonzalez (White Sox) was 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks.  Cesar Suarez was 2-for-4 with a double.  Arlett Mavare (Texas) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out one.

Aragua:  Jose Martinez (Oakland) was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Willson Contreras (Cubs) was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Yorman Bazardo struck out three in 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.

The game:  Alex Nunez (Detroit) hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put Aragua ahead 4-3.  Martinez singled in an insurance run in the seventh.

ANZOATEGUI 8, MAGALLANES 3 IN MAGALLANES (14 INNINGS)

Anzoategui:  Oscar Salazar was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in four.  Brandon Allen (Mets) was 3-for-4 with three walks and two runs.  Mayckol Guaipe (Seattle) pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Magallanes:  Lew Ford (Baltimore) was 3-for-5 with a double and two walks.  Mario Lisson (San Francisco) was 3-for-6 with a home run, his second.  Dustin Richardson (Angels) pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Trailing 3-0 after six, Anzoategui scored single runs in each of the last three innings and came up with five in the fourteenth to win.  Gorkys Hernandez singled in the go-ahead run.  The teams combined to use twenty-four pitchers, fourteen by Magallanes.
