Minor Details: Games of May 12

No offense for the Red Wings.  Johnson and Johnson complete a shutout as the Lookouts split.  A wild inning lifts the Miracle.  Murphy's law wasn't enough for the Kernels.

TOLEDO 8, ROCHESTER 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting star:  Argenis Diaz was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  Lester Oliveros struck out two in a perfect inning.  Caleb Thielbar pitched a perfect inning.  Tim Stauffer pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jefry Marte was 2-for-4 with a grand slam (his second homer) and a walk.  Daniel Fields was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Buck Farmer struck out seven in six shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks.

The game:  The Mud Hens did all their damage in two innings, scoring five in the fifth and three in the ninth.  Marte hit his grand slam in the fifth and Fields had a two-run double in the ninth.  The Red Wings had two on in the second and again in the third but did not threaten to get back into the game after the five-run Mud Hen fifth.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 0-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-4.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Taylor Rogers struck out seven in five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks.

BIRMINGHAM 3, CHATTANOOGA 2 IN BIRMINGHAM (GAME 1--8 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Max Kepler was 2-for-3 with a double.

Pitching star:  Tyler Duffey pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Joey DeMichele was 1-for-2 with a home run.  Courtney Hawkins was 2-for-3 with a double.  Mark Blackman pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout.

The game:  The Barons opened the first with a triple, a single, and a double, scoring twice.  It stayed 2-0 until the fourth, when Miguel Sano doubled and scored.  The Lookouts tied it in the seventh with a single, a double, and a ground out.  That took us to extra innings, and DeMichele, the first Barons batter of the inning, was also the last as he ended it with a walkoff homer in the eighth.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 0-for-4.  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4.  Sano was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Mike Gonzales was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a run.

CHATTANOOGA 4, BIRMINGHAM 0 IN BIRMINGHAM (GAME 2)

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.  Max Kepler was 3-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Madison Boer struck out five in three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  Cole Johnson struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  D. J. Johnson struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Danny Hayes was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Tyler Barnette pitched five innings, allowing an unearned run on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Polanco led off the fourth with a double and scored on an error to give the Lookouts a 1-0 lead.  In the sixth, Polanco singled, stole second, took third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.  The Lookouts added two more in the fourth on a walk, a single, and two more errors.  The Barons got a man to second in four of the seven innings but did not advance any of them to third.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 0-for-4.  Miguel Sano was 0-for-3.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run.

FORT MYERS 4, DUNEDIN 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Alex Swim was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Zach Granite was 0-for-1 with two walks and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Aaron Slegers struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks.  Brandon Peterson struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Todd Van Steensel struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  L. B. Dantzler was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Dawel Lugo was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Mike Reeves was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The game:  RBI singles by Lugo and Reeves gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead in the second.  Garver singled in a run in the fourth and Chad Christensen did the same in the fifth to tie it 2-2.  In the seventh, the Miracle scored two with only one hit, aided by a walk, a balk, an error, and a wild pitch.  The Blue Jays got two on with none out in the eighth but could do nothing further.

Of note:  Christensen was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

PEORIA 5, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer (his second) and two doubles, scoring twice.  Zack Larson was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  C. K. Irby struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.  Michael Theofanopoulos pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Collin Radack was 5-for-6 with a double and an RBI.  Oscar Mercado was 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs.  Andrew Sohn was 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, and a walk, driving in one.

The game:  Doubles by Murphy and Larson put the Kernels up 3-2 after six.  Luis Cruz singled in a run in the ninth to tie it 3-3.  In the ninth, Nick Thompson and Radack delivered run-scoring hits with two out to make it 5-3.  The Kernels got a pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the ninth but could do no more.

Of note:  Tanner English was 1-for-5.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-5 with a walk.  Trey Vavra was 0-for-5.  Mat Batts struck out four in four innings, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks.
