FMD: Off to Alaska

1. I'll be away from (most of) the internet next week. Someone want to claim next week's FMD?

2. So Pepper, CoC, and I missed the Lydia Loveless concert on Sunday night, and freealonzo and Scot gave it mixed reviews. May this offer us all consolation. Recorded last year, so it doesn't have any of those new songs I want to hear.

3. In last week's comments, I mentioned the May death of Michael Kandel, who recorded as Tranquility Bass. His debut album was released on astralwerks, and it seems that so much that was on astralwerks is out of print but not reclaimable by the original artists (or even Rhino?). Maybe it's on iTunes or something. You should pick up a used copy if you find it. Go ahead and listen to it all:

      1. No, really! According to my sources, if all goes well he'll be fishing for halibut.

I'm kind of sad you didn't have this song in your post proper, but I'm happy to help you.

Aquinas absolutely loves this one. Kids are weird.

    1. Oh, the one song I know about Alaska is Cash's version of Horton's "When it's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)".
Smart of Horton to choose a temperature that doesn't need conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius (which would have been called "Centigrade" at the time).
"(It's Fourteen Below)" would have been more accurate but that would have required nestled parentheticals: "When it's Springtime in Alaska (It's Fourteen Below (Fahrenheit, 26 Below Centigrade))".

    1. Solid list DK.

re #1 - you've no doubt heard "Still Life"? Love that tune.

[edit] also heard "Amor Fati" by artist #7 on a Sub Pop compilation disc a few years back - was on heavy rotation for quite awhile.

      1. #1 - yep, for sure. I probably like that album (Skying) a little more than Luminous.

#7 - I'd say the best (or at least my favorite) survivor artist of the late, lamented chillwave genre.

  8. The advance single from Kurt Vile's upcoming release B'lieve I'm Going Down is, how should I put this, pretty pimpin'.

    1. I'm very excited for this--advance word is uniformly positive. I've always been a fan, but it feels like he's making a pretty big jump.

September 25th will be a big music day for me, as in addition to the KV release, Julia Holter's new one is released.

    1. Anyone else ever hear of this band? They were a minor thing in Europe in 2001, when I studied abroad, and I absolutely love what I’ve heard from them. Drum and Base/House stuff I guess?
    3. I don’t really like this version of it. Give me The Turtles.
    6. Uhoh, early 90’s release… beware the wrath of Hungry Joe! 😉
8-9. I like these two being next to each other!

    1. 1. I have not. I pulled up "Hide U" on YouTube and, I would have pegged it as Faithless with a guest vocalist, or maybe a Rollo & Sister Bliss remix of someone else.
Here, try some Faithless: "God is a DJ", "Insomnia", "Bring My Family Back". Didn't try to make it so that all of these were ones with Maxi Jazz rapping on them. They've had other vocalists, but, for example, the tracks with Dido don't really have that sound that Kosheen immediately made me think of.

      6. Fantastic song on an album that I could care less about. This song (even in the clean MTV version) made such a big impact among some friends. An older kid called it "Such great songwriting" or something like that.

    2. 4. This may be the first song I've heard of about the actuarial profession. I'm going to listen now...

    3. 3. I don’t really like this version of it. Give me The Turtles.

You should check out this version some time:

    4. 6. "Creep" was in the regular rotation on the jukebox at the pool hall in Prague where we hung out at lot. Mostly because the English language song selection was slim. I can't hear it without thinking of cheap beer in a smoky billiards room. And I love it for that.

      1. Of which, Ride will be at Mill City Nights on September 29th. Saw them twice back in their heyday and they were excellent. Watched their set from Primavera Sound and they still sound great, though it was a little disconcerting to see that they look like middle-aged dudes. I think half of them were still teenagers when I saw them tour behind Nowhere in '90 or '91.

  11. I may be going to see Hairball in Glenwood on Saturday night (Waterama!).
I don't know what to think about that.
One guy's dressed up as Prince, so that's cool. And there's a snake!
However, I was never much for hair metal even when it was popular. (Metallica doesn't count, and I only liked Use Your Illusion GNR).

  12. 01. Father ft. Tommy Genesis - "Vamp" from Who's Gonna Get F***** First?
    02. Boosie Badazz ft. Keyshia Cole & J. Cole* - "Black Heaven" from Touch Down 2 Cause Hell
    03. Algiers - "And When You Fall" from Algiers
    04. Gucci Mane - "Goin" from Dinner
    05. Zex - "We're Rebels" from Fight for Yourself
    06. Screaming Females - "Burning Car" from Rose Mountain
    07. Eula - "Your Beat" from Wool Sucking**
    08. Action Bronson - "Brand New Car" from Mr. Wonderful
    09. Tidemouth - "What's Needed" from Velvet & Stone
    10. PINS - "Everyone Says" from Wild Nights

    BT1. Future - "Stick Talk" from DS2
BT2. Hammerhead - "Victoria" from Duh, The Big City***

    * No relation.
** I really need to go back and listen to this album.
*** Going to see them for the third time tomorrow night, opening for godheadSilo's first show in 17 years. Pretty juiced.

    1. Wool Sucking has been one of those albums that I keep coming back to, it's never dominated my listening time, but when I'm scrolling through my library, I stop on that album quite often.
