November 17, 2016: I Pledge Unto Thee…

Pledge Drive is going well. I'll get an update of donations later today. Also, the well's running a little dry, so if anyone has an extra post lying around inside themselves...

  1. A place for Twins fans who also happen to be witty, bookish foodies with excellent (or at least unique) tastes in beer, music, and movies.

It seems I've been followed on Twitter. Also, judging by the @thewgom description, I'm way out of my league here. My membership remains founded in my aspirations to adequacy. Fortunately, I got a pledge in before discovering this.

    1. I think it's known as a meatwagon. I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. I now soak my beans either with the fast soak method (cover the beans with water and bring to a boil, cut off heat and rest the beans for 10 minutes) or the over night soak method. Drain and rinse the beans, and then bring them to boil without anything else in the pot. After browning the sausage in a separate pan and removing them, I add the veg to that pan with the with the spice mix and deglaze the pan with some water or stock. When the beans are smashable I add the veg, sausage, and then bay leaf + worcestershire (or something like this... sometimes I forget a step and add the bay leaf late or totally forget the worcestershire... ymmv) to the pot with the beans and let simmer til flavors are combined.

I hope that clears things up a bit.

I think this is directed at me. Work's been heavy this week, and some personal things. I make no promises.

        1. I've got a niche to fill, but I've been dealing with tired as hell kids all week and just haven't had time to finish my post.

  3. I finished a post, but I didn't schedule it since I figured you would do that whenever you wanted it to run.

    1. Right, trying to spread them out a little. I've been asking people to schedule them for 11/21/2016 at 12:00am. I can shift them around after that.

  4. Today's entry in 1987 rewind has already fallen off the board. That's fine--there's lots of good stuff today--but I just wanted people to know it was there.

  5. Good for Gardy. Also former Twins great Mike Fetters!

  6. Going to Scandia on Saturday for Thanksgiving week.

I had three large volunteer quaking aspen taken down as they were a risk to the house if the weather so determined. So the Hnos are coming over on Sunday with chainsaws to help cut up the fallen trees, make brush piles, i.e. have fun.

I was planning on smoking some Lake Trout during the day to send home smoked fish with those guys but the gang at Coastal SeaFoods in St. Paul said the Lake Trout season is over. So I'm going with Arctic Char instead (ordered 3 3-4 lb fish). I've had Char at Oceannaire before but no personal cooking experience.

Dude at Coastal said there is no scaling with Char, but they will clean/gill the fish. He thought Alder would be a good smoking wood.

Little Hnos sent me a note saying his buddies recommend a 6-hour brine (no-iodine salt with some brown sugar) prior to the smoke, then a two hour smoke at 150F, then 175 for another 1.5 hrs.

  7. Got an alert from my ESPN app on my phone that the Twins are likely or expected to sign Jason Castro or something like that, however, I swiped it clear on my phone and now can't find a confirmation link online. I think it was Olney that was credited with it but not sure.

    1. I know they have been linked to Castro in the rumor mill. Havent seen any signing confirmation on the tweet machine.

      1. I assume he's supposed to be a good defensive catcher, as his highest batting average in the last three years is .222. He draws some walks and has a little pop, but his OPS the last three years is lower than Suzuki's.

        1. Yes, high on pitch framing stats. Indians got to the World Series with similar catchers. Even when Gomes got hurt, Indians didn't even try to trade for Suzuki.

  8. If Trout develops glaucoma this off season does he make the HOF despite the 10 year rule?

5 full seasons. 5 years leading the league in WAR. 2, 1, 2, 2, 1 in MVP voting.

    1. I vote him in. I probably would have voted him in after four seasons. He legitimately can argue he should have won the MVP for his first five seasons.

  9. Thing I just noticed:

The Twins attempted to deal [Tommy] Herr to Philadelphia in August [1988], but the Oakland A's blocked waivers on any player who appeared heading in the Twins' direction.

I'm curious who the Twins were going to get in return. Nice of the A's to force the Twins to hold onto a guy who hated to be in Minnesota.
