We discussed it a couple weeks ago, but we recently lost Matt Murphy. He sure had some licks.

I've got a tabletop game gearing up for production, and at this point I'm just hoping for enough money to go somewhere.
I'm forty, and have still never traveled out of this country. Never. I've been all over the lower 48, but have never been anywhere else.
It's game eighty-one. After this one, the season will be half over. The Twins will be either eleven or nine games under .500, depending on how this one goes. Buxton is in AAA. Sano is in high-A. We have a catcher on our roster who's batting .132. Our big free-agent slugger is batting .192 with nine homers. Of the two starters we acquired, one has an ERA well over five and the other isn't too far under. Tonight, Jorge Polanco comes back. The Twins are acting as if he's some sort of savior, rather than a player with limited defensive skills who nearly lost his job a year ago.
But hey, we've got Willians Astudillo! And each day is a new day. And it's baseball, where even the worst team can beat the best team on a given day. Maybe we'll be given a good day today. It's Kyle Gibson against Brett Suter. Let's do this! Go Twins!
I keep hearing talk like it's hot out or something.

Dick Greco played twelve seasons in the minors, hitting 328 home runs, but never got a chance in the majors.
Red Rush was a radio broadcaster for the White Sox, the Athletics, and the Cardinals.
Mike Reilly was a major league umpire from 1977-2010.
After my brother was mugged a couple of nights ago, he says nothing was hurt except his pride. Physically he's fine and that's good, but I'm sure such an incident would undo me for a while. Hell, this is undoing me and I wasn't even there.
One of the things I love about travel is that it reminds me how big and how varied the world really is. I don't expect I'll ever travel as much as I wish I could, but at least reading books set in other places makes a pretty good consolation prize.
The book I really want to get my hands on this summer is set in Japan: Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata. A single article about it in the New York Times was enough to pique my interest.
I'd also like to find a book that covers some New Orleans history. Spending a few days there made me well aware of just how little of the region's history I know. One of the most striking things I saw there was an empty pedestal. It was only when I consulted a map and saw the name "Lee Circle" did I realize what had been there. I'd known in the abstract about statues being removed last year, but somehow it felt different when the evidence of it was right there in front of me.
So . . . what are your favorite books set in places far from your home? And more generally, what have you been reading?

The Cubs send Jon Lester to the mound today. He's got a 2.18 ERA on the year (191 ERA+), and had a 1.13 ERA in June. His ERA at Wrigley is 1.25. His WHIP is 1.084. I guess what I'm saying is he doesn't allow a lot of run(s) or runner(s). Lester has 10 wins already and will likely contend for a Cy Young award. The Twins counter with Lance Lynn. He also has numbers associated with his pitching performance. They are not as good as Lester's and he will likely not contend for a Cy Young award. To my mind this season is still far from over and we have yet to stray into GOSO territory. But if you look real hard and squint your eyes a little, you can almost see it from here. Play ball!
Fun to play DJ this week, and encouraging that I was able to put up a couple bands that haven't seen our video page yet. The Struts are another fun one. High-energy, fabulous English rock. The whole album is pretty enjoyable if you're in to that sort thing.
Thanks, all.
Well, I'm glad I didn't sit through 4 hours of that game in the wretched heat. At the same time, I rather would have done that instead of having some lady total my car on the way to the game. Blarg.
