2019 Game 53: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Minnesota Twins

My apologies for the abbreviated game log. Doing stuff during today. Y'all know how things are going; hoping for more of the same.

Also, if they're going to keep doing two game series with the Brewers, I still don't understand why they insist on doing them on weekdays. Whatever... Guess they don't like money.

  1. LH starter, and an interleague game - a chance to improve two splits where we're not doing as well

I wish Garver was back; the shine is wearing off Astudillo's pumpkin

  2. MLB's blackout rules are ridiculous. Anyone defending them should try explaining to a little kid — a nascent baseball fan — why they can't watch their favorite team — located in another state — because a team located in the state where they live is playing their favorite team in said other state.

        1. Get a VPN and look in the international NFL game pass. A fraction of the DirecTV product and you get some fun extras in the all 22 camera and can stream replays as well as getting the live games.

    1. Do you have any friends or family in Minnesota that would be willing to give you a cable log in? Because it's not blocked out doing it that way.

Totally agree that blackout rules are incredibly stupid and nonsensical though.

  3. In 5 starts Gonzalez gave up - 2, 1, 0, 1, 3 Runs and never went less than 5 innings.

He just gave up 4 in the second inning today.

    1. By our #1 draft pick - I mean thats just what he is supposed to do anyway right?

  4. I turned the game on and immediately spookied Bux's home run. Now I finally have a chance to sit down and watch.

    1. We had lunch today with a couple - he of the meat persuasion - and he just did a long pellet smoke of pork butt. He said it was a disaster, didn't pull after the cook - and he tossed it. Natch.

      1. Oh. My. Gawd.

dude, just wrap it and put it in the oven for another hour or two. Or put it into a crock pot. It. Will. Pull.

    2. Last night I made grilled veggie sandwiches. Roasted Red Pepper quarters, Hummus, my homemade oven roasted tomato catsup, and avocado. Instant pot not needed.

  5. My wife got some Trader Joe's dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and holy crap are they amazing.

      1. They are totally blowing my mind. I love reeses peanut butter cups, and all, but these are perfection.

    1. Costco sometimes has Justin's Organic Peanut Butter Cups (both dark and milk). Those are worth seeking out.

  6. Buxton caught that easily, but I'm fairly confident in saying that if anyone else were in center there that's a double, or at the very least a diving grab.

  7. Just saw the replay of the near-decapitation of the Brewers' pitcher (last inning?). How the hell did he catch that?

    1. Did they ever give a good camera angle? It looked like the ball may have glanced off his face into his mitt.

      1. Did not see an angle showing that. Not that it didn't happen. I just didn't see it. I mean, they had to hurry back to the Dodgers-Mets game and all.

  8. Two runs scored on successive sac flies to Buxton? Deep, or no respect for his arm?

    1. They were deep. On one, he beat the runner with the throw but had the unfortunate luck to hit him in the back.

  9. Ok, I guess I will cut some slack for GBA on Memorial Day. But man, do I detest that song at baseball games.

  10. This is no time to help this Jeremy-type-pitcher-at-the-major-league-level to lower his ERA. Go get 'em, boys.

    1. Gaaah. Dude has an ERA of almost 10, and the heart of our order goes down 1-2-3. Boo.

    1. I dunno. Coming into the game the bullpen had a collective slash line of .246/328/369 with 174:68 K:BB in 159.1. That's pretty darned good.

      1. I mean, it makes me nervous because I still don't quite trust the pen. But the performance has been good.

        1. Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics.

I'd like to see a breakdown/split of the bullpen stats in close games vs blowouts. It seems to me a lot of the bullpen stats are coming with more than 2 or even 3 run lead.

          1. In fairness, that's where a majority of the wins have been coming from. Rogers blew the lead yesterday, but he's been one of the best relievers in the AL most of the season.

Harper's been surprisingly good (though i'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop), and Parker has been very good at the role he's been given. The bullpen could use more depth, but that's the case with just about every bullpen in MLB.

            1. again, this was one of the easiest things to address in the offseason. seriously, you could have just thrown money at it (which they had plenty of). hopefully it won't end up being their undoing.

                1. This, too. Chad Green has been a great reliever for the Yankees in the past two seasons, and he's been batting practice so far this year.

                2. I would quibble with Rodney. He was fine. Beat his FIP (3.80 FIP versus 3.09 ERA) but that's fine because he was flipped to Oakland.

            2. Yes, if you look at the bullpen statistics, a very heavy proportion of runs have been given up by the Hindenberg, Stewart, Mejia and others who are no longer on the active roster. Going into yesterday they only had 2 blown saves, which was tops in the American League. They are really 2 good arms away from being excellent in my opinion.

          2. I just did this for all the pitchers (this includes last night - and also starting pitchers)

Innings that started with Twins up by 3 or more
            April - 62 (31 runs allowed)
            May - 100 (36 runs allowed)

Innings that started with Twins up by 1 or 2 runs
            April - 71 (41 runs allowed)
            May - 46 (19 runs allowed)

            Innings that started tied
            April - 63 (23 runs allowed)
            May - 43 (13 runs allowed)

Innings that started with Twins down by 1 or 2 runs
            April - 17 (10 runs allowed)
            May - 26 (13 runs allowed)

Innings that started with Twins down by 3 or more runs
            April - 22 (18 runs allowed)
            May - 16 (4 runs allowed)

          3. From BB-Ref:

Pretty much the bullpen is about the same as usual in close games, as far as I can tell?

            Bullpen overall - .246/.329/.373 against

            Late/Close - .264/.335/.370 against
            High Lev. - .253/.323/.375 against

A slightly higher BABIP in late/close situations, but otherwise it's ... the same?

  11. why the hell are the radio guys even talking about having Arcia bunt with a guy on second and no outs? That would have been dumb.

    1. Well, that isn't really "getting to" Hader, but we'll take it. Now we need a Cronometer.

  12. So, in cocktail news. The Boy's girlfriend brought us a kewt set of mixers and gin from a company called With Company Cocktails. I've been making a cocktail with one of the mixers (it has cucumber, lime, mint, sugar and water):

about 6-8 very thin slices of English cucumber
    2-3 basil leaves, torn
    tablespoon of sugar
    piece of lime

Pound all of these well in a mortar, then combine with 1.5 oz of the mixer, 1.5 oz of vodka or gin. Pour into a Tom Collins or similar filled with ice, top with tonic water and stir gently. Very refreshing. You could do the same without the mixer just by combining more lime juice, cucumber, and simple syrup.
