Minor Details: Games of August 25

Joe Ryan continues to look good.  Roy Morales and Trey Cabbage keep hitting.  Jeferson Morales hits another homer.  The Mighty Mussels take advantage of walks.

TOLEDO 4, ST. PAUL 2 IN TOLEDO

Riley Greene's two-run single in the seventh put the Mud Hens up 3-2.  Spencer Torkelson added a homer in the eighth.

Batting stars:  Mark Contreras was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his thirteenth.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4.

Pitching star:  Joe Ryan struck out eight in five innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Greene was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Torkelson was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Ricardo Pinto pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks and striking out three.

Good stats:  Buxton is batting .409.  Jose Miranda was 1-for-5 and is batting .333.

Bad stats:  B. J. Boyd was 0-for-2 and is batting zero.  Trevor Larnach was 0-for-2 and is batting .158.  J. T. Riddle was 0-for-3 and is batting .188.

Record:  The Saints are 53-45, in third place in the AAA East/Midwest, 2.5 games behind Toledo.

TULSA 3, WICHITA 2 IN WICHITA

It was 1-1 after five, but sixth-inning homers by Miguel Vargas and Ryan Noda to give the Drillers all the runs they needed.

Batting stars:  Roy Morales was 2-for-4.  Trey Cabbage was 1-for-3 with a home run (his fifteenth) and a walk.

Pitching star:  Evan Sisk pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up a walk and striking out two.

Opposition stars:  Vargas was 1-for-3 with a home run (his thirteenth) and two walks.

Starter:  Tyler Beck struck out six in 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks.

Good stats:  Morales is batting .311.

Bad stats:  Erik Manoah, Jr. gave up zero runs in 0.2 innings and has an ERA of 6.75.

Record:  The Wind Surge is 58-40, in first place in the AA Central/North, five games ahead of Arkansas and Tulsa.

BELOIT 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN BELOIT (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

It was 1-1 through four, but the Snappers scored single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Batting star:  Aaron Sabato was 1-for-3 with a double in his High-A debut.

Pitching star:  Louie Varland struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Connor Scott was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, and two runs.  Ynmanol Marinez was 2-for-3 with a home run, his fourth.  Dax Fulton pitched four innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks and striking out three.

Good stats:  Yunior Severino was 0-for-1 and is batting .378.  Aaron Sabato was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.  Varland has an ERA of 1.86.  Zach Featherstone gave up a run on one hit and has an ERA of 2.14.

Bad stats:  None.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, BELOIT 4 IN BELOIT (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Trailing 3-1, the Kernels scored five in the sixth.  Jeferson Morales hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning.

Batting stars:  Wander Javier was 2-for-3 with a home run (his eleventh), two runs, and two RBIs.  Morales was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, his third.

Pitching star:  Ryan Shreve pitched a perfect inning and struck out one.

Opposition stars:  Dustin Skelton was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, his seventh.  Victor Mesa was 1-for-3 with a home run, his fourth.  Josh Simpson struck out five in 3.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks.

The Marauders scored three in the third and led the rest of the way.

Batting stars:  None.  The Mighty Mussels had just two hits, both singles.

Pitching stars:  Casey Legumina struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.  Bradley Hanner struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.

Opposition stars:  Abraham Gutierrez was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, a walk, and three runs.  Jack Herman was 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs.  Eddy Yean struck out four in four innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Good stats:  Patrick Winkel was 0-for-1 and is batting .375.  Christian Encarnacion-Strand (which is a lot to put on the back of a jersey) was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.

Bad stats:  Gabe Snyder was 0-for-2 and is batting zero.  Will Holland was 0-for-1 and is batting .178.  Misael Urbina was 0-for-3 and is batting .188.  Hanner has an ERA of 7.71.  A. J. Labas allowed four runs in three innings and has an ERA of 12.00.

FORT MYERS 12, BRADENTON 1 IN BRADENTON (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)*

*The game was actually played in Fort Myers, but it was a makeup game and Bradenton was designated the home team

Pitching stars:  Matt Mullenbach struck out four in four innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks.  Matthew Swain pitched two shutout innings, walking one and striking out one.  Carlos Suniaga pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition star:  Jackson Glenn was 2-for-3.

Good stats:  Winkel is batting .400.  Jake Rucker was 1-for-3 and is batting .333.  Mullenbach has an ERA of 1.23.
