        1. It is the ridge beam.

For bonus points, is there even a header over the window? Stay tuned, as our contractor hasn't opened that up yet to find out.

We are replacing the entire ridge beam, along with the roof. My kids didn't want to inherit anything anyway.

    1. I don't want to alarm you but there's a hole in your roof. And your ceiling. And your ridge board. And probably your wallet.

          1. This may come as a shock, but it looks like the then-owner (who added the second floor onto a 1938 bungalow) acted as his own contractor. Apparently he was a carpenter for Caltrans. Which does not inspire confidence in our roads.

And the building inspector at the time was corrupt/incompetent AF.

            1. now, some of us are capable of being our own contractor, but, uh, I would not do it for a whole second story addition.

              1. The hits keep on coming. In the bay between rafters next to the BFH (Big Effing Hole) on the other side of the room is a scarf joint in the ridge beam! Sandwiched by plywood and no structure below it for support. Greaaaat.

I really, really hope I don't have to drop $$$ to get a structural engineer....

                1. Doc, that's what joint compound and caulk were invented for. What you can't see won't hurt you.

                    1. Apparently that is what the original inspector thought

Current sitch: the head bldg inspector didn't shut us down, but we will need a structural engineer to do calculations. Oh, and there is rot on the south end of the beam too. So we got that going for us. Which is nice.

                  1. Oy. I watched a YouTube video last week of a guy fixing patching a big rust hole in his pickup truck frame with Bondo.

                    1. Our contractor had originally speculated that he could repair (mild) rot in the beam with a "wood hardener".

Not that I am enthusiastic about spending $$$$ to keep my roof from collapsing, but I am ok he's moved on from that idea.

                    2. Doc, I'm not going to admit that I've committed sins in the past, but I have wood bondo'd some pretty gnarly wounds just to make them look better with great success. Of course I've also sold both those houses.....

        1. $35 million for this year and next. That could rise to $52 million if his 2025 option vests. But that was sunk cost and this allows them to get better prospects in return.

  1. Looks like a great night for baseball in StL -- slightly overcast with a light breeze, rain not 'til after the game, and we're facing TBD (he's not a lefty, is he??). I should be at Ballpark Village by 5PM, hopefully see some Citizens & family there. Go Twins!

  2. I'm perfectly fine with the Twins not doing much at the trade deadline. It's not like they're one player away from having a champion, so there's no point in mortgaging the future to acquire someone. Besides, given the players the rest of the division gave up, the Twins may have moved ahead just by not getting rid of anyone.

    1. They also don't have many top prospects left after last year. A right-handed bat would have been nice but they would need to drop Kepler or Larnach to make room.

    2. I agree. The Twins have roughly an average payroll and are playing .500 ball. Cue “they were who we thought they were.” Mid-season trades are overrated anyway. The few impact trades that happened are memorable, but everyone forgets all the nothingburger trades that didn’t tip the balance of anything.

          1. That one still chaps my hide. He was pretty good with the Gigantes before getting hurt. Nasty slider. If healthy, he could have really helped the bullpen. Alas.

            1. I do not recall hearing he was suspended for the entire 2021 season. Looks like no team has wanted to even see if he's any good anymore.
