FMD – 5/9/14: Cream of the First Third of the Crop

As AMR is occupied, I am covering for him this week. So, to kick off the music discussion this week, I'm going to share my 10 favorite albums that have come out so far this year. I always try to keep lists during the year to make my year end list easier, but I usually fail. So hopefully helps me keep that up this year. And maybe something I've listed will appeal to you. Both of those things would be pretty cool. Continue reading FMD – 5/9/14: Cream of the First Third of the Crop

FMD 5-2-14: Lydia

It's been more than a week now, but I'm still thinking of that show.
She needs to get a guitar that stays tuned or something. There was so much momentum-draining dead time between some songs.
Maybe other venues have spoiled me, but the sound seemed really muddy.
She's a great performer with great songs, and that was a really good show. I don't mean to be so harsh, but it could have easily been so much better for me.

Freealonzo taking over FMD this week…

This year reminded me that we are hitting the 20-year anniversary of a lot of very good and influential albums.  In a way it makes sense, Nirvana’s Nevermind went huge in 1992 and the result was that a lot of “alternative” bands were “discovered” and promoted by the major labels and music consumers were more open to explore the music environment.  I think 1994 was the baby boom generated by the phenomena that was Nevemind.    In fact I would argue that 1994 was one of the greatest years ever for popular music.  Do you agree?  What about 1984? Or 1968?  1971?  Those years can make a case for best ever as well.

After the break see the list of influential (imho) albums released in 1994 and let us know what year you think was the “greatest ever.”  Best thing is there is no wrong answer (listing does not mean endorsement, athough I would swear by most of these albums).  Oh and don't forget to drop your lists.

FMD: March 21, 2014

I'm still really excited to be taking my 8-year-old to see Colin Stetson at the Cedar.
Four weeks from yesterday.

What the first concert you attended? Have any of you brought your children to shows? At what age?
My first show was Stone Temple Pilots/Meat Puppets/Jawbox at Roy Wilkins in '94. I was 16.
