ms. calvi's been generating some heat across the pond through most of 2011. throaty, lustful, and proficiently wields an axe to boot (though those skills aren't so much on display in this video). compared favourably to siouxsie and PJ harvey, here she is on later... getting a good amount of sound out of three people.

So it turns out her brother, Matt, was the one committed to being one of the worst live performers of all time. Good to know.

The fairer part of the Fiery Furnaces, live in Toronto, 2011. Go buy her new solo album.
ms. spaulding won the grammy this year for best new artist, making her the first jazz artist to do so, and despite the fact that she's been on the scene a number of years. here's her showing everyone how to slap a bass.

i need something to calm my nerves after a stressful road trip. how about some early 90s aussie alternative?

here is my newfound love, tUnE-yArDs. normally, i'm pretty anti-looping pedal. in fact, i'm normally very anti-looping pedal (especially someone that uses two of them), but merrill garbus makes it work for me. her new studio album "w h o k i l l" is fabulous as well. even peckish jane likes it (which surprised me, i'll admit). anyway, this is one of those acts to keep an eye on:

and for fun, one more after the jump...

in a similar vein, this is one of my favorite one hit wonders from the 90s. truthfully, OHW status might be a little generous. yeah, "feed the tree" got some plays in the MTV rotation, but i don't think that mark mcgrath will be pimping it in 10 years for a new time life collection infomercial like is bound to happen to "lovefool". anyway, i know there are some fans around the nation, so enjoy.

The Cardigans are one of my most favorite unfairly labeled one hit wonder bands. I would put them behind Superdrag but ahead of Fountains of Wayne.
I haven't done much breaking up lately but my favorite break up album of all time is Long Gone Before Daylight from the Cardigans.
