Joe Hisaishi – “Sixth Station”

Can't be a Rhubarb_Runner week without some soundtrack music. My favorite soundtrack composer playing piano on my favorite song by him. This was used in the movie Spirited Away during the incredibly beautiful and melancholy water train sequence.

And below the break, the composer conducts Princess Mononoke Symphonic Suite (and plays piano), from the movie Princess Mononoke.

Planet X – “Inside Black”

Planet X is one of my favorite prog jazz groups; they seem unable to play anything in 4/4 time. There aren't any live videos available of their songs I like the most, but here's a good one from a concert in Sofia, Bulgaria that was recorded for a television special:

Steve Hackett – “Horizons”

One of the finest concert openers I've seen was on the GTR tour, when Steve Hackett and Steve Howe performed various solo and duet pieces (and that particular concert was recorded for King Biscuit Flower Hour). Steve Howe prefers steel strings, while Steve Hackett favors nylon; here's one of Hackett's more beautiful numbers:

Franz Ferdinand – 40′

i had been holding onto this to play after game 122, but a) it was in the hopes that we'd be fighting for something, b) i just remembered i was doing so, and c) that's going to fall smack_dab in the middle of rhu_ru week. so, uh, yeah. close enough.

Eleanor Friedberger – I Won’t Fall Apart On You Tonight

So it turns out her brother, Matt, was the one committed to being one of the worst live performers of all time.  Good to know.

The fairer part of the Fiery Furnaces, live in Toronto, 2011. Go buy her new solo album.

The Shakes – You Ain’t Alone

It is customary as WGOM vjays to play songs with live videos. Today, I am breaking that custom. You can give this video a lesser rating because of that. However, it is my duty to bring you terrific music. This is me doing so.

The Shakes are an unsigned band out of Alabama that have a lady singing Otis Redding tunes kind of vibe to them. This is their profile page on reverb nation. While they are not playing in the Twin Cities soon, nor do they have a record out for you to buy, I suggest keeping an eye on this group. This song is too good to go unnoticed.
