Minor Details: Games of 7/20

The Rock Cats sweep!  The Miracle wins a slugfest.  A big comeback for the E-Twins!

DURHAM 7, ROCHESTER 4 IN DURHAM

Batting starsTsuyoshi Nishioka was 3-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Danny Valencia was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  Rene Rivera was 3-for-5 with a double.

Pitching starKyle Waldrop worked a scoreless inning despite giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Will Rhymes and Stephen Vogt were each 2-for-4 with a home run.  Lance Pendleton struck out seven in five innings, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks.

Key inning:  The first.  Brian Dinkelman led off the game with a double, but never advanced from second base.  In the bottom of the first, Rhymes led off with a home run.  With one out, Henry Wrigley doubled and Vogt hit a two-run homer to put the Bulls up 3-0.

Other:  The Red Wings stranded fourteen men and were 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

NEW BRITAIN 13, HARRISBURG 2 IN HARRISBURG (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

Batting starsOswaldo Arcia was 3-for-5 with a double and two home runs, giving him five on the year.  He scored three times and drove in six.  Rene Tosoni was 2-for-5 with a home run, his second.  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-2 with a double and four walks, scoring three times.

Pitching starsBlake Martin had started the night before, striking out two in two hitless innings while walking one.  Marty Popham struck out four in three innings, giving up a run on four hits and a walk.  Edgar Ibarra threw two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

Opposition stars:  Sean Nicol was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.  Jimmy Van Ostrand and Zach Walters were each 2-for-4.

Key inning:  The fourth.  The Rock Cats led 4-1.  James Beresford led off with a single and took second when Aaron Hicks walked.  They both scored on a Herrmann double.  Arcia then hit a two-run homer to put the game out of reach at 8-1.

NEW BRITAIN 5, HARRISBURG 4 IN HARRISBURG (GAME 2—SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting starsDaniel Rohlfing and Shawn Roof were each 2-for-3.

Pitching starDakota Watts pitched a scoreless innings, walking one.

Opposition stars:  Zach Walters was 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run.  Sean Nicol was 2-for-3 with a double.

Key inning:  The seventh.  The score was tied at four.  Rohlfing led off with a single, took second on a bunt, went to third on Roof’s infield single, and scored on a ground out.

Other:  The Rock Cats overcame three errors.

FORT MYERS 9, LAKELAND 7 IN LAKELAND

Batting starsJosmil Pinto was 4-for-5 with a triple, scoring three times.  Lance Ray was 2-for-5 with a home run, his tenth.  Daniel Rams was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Hernan Perez was 2-for-4 with a double.  James Robbins hit a three-run homer.  Ryan Woolley struck out four in three shutout innings.

Key inning:  The second.  It was a scoreless tie.  Pinto led off with a single and scored on a Rams double.  A walk put runners on first and second.  Angel Morales then hit a two-run triple and scored on a single by Daniel Santana to put the Miracle up 4-0.

LANSING 2, BELOIT 0 IN BELOIT

Batting starDrew Leachman was 2-for-4.

Pitching starsDavid Hurlbut struck out seven in eight innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks.  Zachary Jones struck out the side in the ninth.

Opposition stars:  Kenny Wilson was 2-for-3.  Noah Syndergaard struck out six in five innings, allowing three hits and two walks.

Key inning:  The eighth.  Leading 1-0, the Lugnuts put together a single, a bunt, and another single to score a valuable insurance run.

Other:  There is a Twins Weekend breakfast in Beloit this morning featuring special guests T. C. Bear, Snappy D. Turtle, and Al Newman.

ELIZABETHTON 8, JOHNSON CITY 6 IN JOHNSON CITY

Batting starsAdam Walker was 3-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), driving in three.  D. J. Hicks was 3-for-5.  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-5 with a double.

Pitching starTyler Duffey struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Carson Kelly was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.  Lance Jeffries was 2-for-4.  Zachary Petrick allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings.

Key inning:  The eighth.  It was a 6-6 tie.  With one out, the Twins put together five consecutive singles, with Travis Harrison, Walker, Jhonatan Arias, Kelvin Mention, and Candido Pimentel all hitting safeties, to take an 8-6 lead.

Other:  The Twins came back from a 5-1 deficit after five innings.  They also overcame four errors.

GCL TWINS 10, RED SOX 4 AT RED SOX

Batting starsJohn Murphy was 4-for-5 with two doubles.  Jorge Fernandez was 3-for-4.  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching starsRandy Rosario struck out four in four innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.  Hung Yi Chen struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Kevin Mager was 2-for-4 with a double.  Jeffrey Wendelkin threw two shutout innings.

Key inning:  The second.  The Twins trailed 1-0, but put together a walk, four singles, and an error to tally four times.  Wade, Murphy, and Aderlin Mejia each delivered an RBI single.

DSL PADRES AT TWINS

The game was suspended after three innings with the Twins leading 6-1.  They scored five times in the third while getting one hit, benefiting from two hit batsmen and three Padres errors.
