        1. If my quick math is correct*, if Detroit wins it all, that's at least 10 more points for me, which on its own makes me uncatchable (even more so if I double up on any of them). Winning a contest here just might be enough to make me pull for the Tigs. That and the @dadboner tweets it would spawn.

*I fully expect sean to find my error

          1. If the Tigers win, that's a minimum of ten points. However, none of your predictions match free's, so it's possible he could get the NLCS exactly right and win eight points, putting him at 18 compared to your 16. That appears to be the only possible chance of you losing, iff the Tigers win the Series.

  1. Welp, I woke up this morning to once again see there is no justice in the world. I'm finding that my interest in the playoffs has been sapped. Bring on the Wolves!

    1. I do remember being in the same spot last season, but being sucked back in by a wonderful world series.

  2. Whether you cheer for the teams that won or not, this has been an incredible start to the playoffs. All four DS go five games, the Giants win three straight road elimination games, the Raul Ibanez game and then the Cards' comeback last night when once again they were down to their final strike twice and still win the series.

    1. I think that's a lot of why my interest levrl is low. All these good stories, and I can't see any of them while they happen because it was all on cable. Combined with the yankees and cabrera still being involved and I'm finding it harder to care.

  3. Guys, are the Cards that bad? Best player leaves (though they get the typically underrated Beltr´n to replace him), HOF manager retires and is replaced with a rookie manager, their former catcher. And Yadier Molina is really great.

      1. I don't dislike either of those teams. I'm just bummed that the new blood all went down, leaving us with a slate of the usual. The DS round was incredible, but not a single team I was cheering for moved on.

  4. You know what, I'm going to root for Carlos Beltran now. The guy has been amazing his whole career (87% stolen base percentage!!!) and got unfairly blamed for the Mets' failure in 2006. He has the best OPS in the history of the playoffs, far surpassing Ruth and Gehrig. And with Larussa gone it makes it easier. Perhaps a WS ring will help his HOF case, too.

    1. I do remember pulling super hard for the Astros the year Beltran went absolutely ape-sh-- in the playoffs. Seems as good a reason to pull for a team as any. (See also: above)

    1. hmm, that's an interesting story. i'm don't know if it in the zone, or some other forbidden or lightly treaded territory, so i'll withhold comment.

  5. Holy Crap! The first ALCS game is tonight! No day off between series! No day off for the Yankees. I love the scheduling this year!

So this is why the ALDS game last night came first.

Bud*, I know you think with the owners' wallets. How good was this LDS round? Please stick with the 2-3 scheduling and minimal games off! If the series extend, there can always be two game fours and two game threes on one day and two game fives and two game fives (all guaranteed to be elimination games for at least one contestant).

*Notice I called you by your preferred name. I'm trying to be nice here.

    1. I loved this scheduling as well (although my own work schedule didn't play nicely). I'm stunned to learn that the ALCS starts tonight. I wasn't even allowing myself to get into baseball mode.

Not sure who I'm pulling for. I guess I just want a good game.

      1. I'm pulling for RAÚL IBAÑEZ to hit multiple homeruns against Dancy McFartsworthy.
I'm pulling for Scherzer to pitch a perfect game.
I'm pulling for Cap'n Jetes, ARod (if he fields), Prince, Miggy, and especially Tieixieiria to make multiple embarassing errors, like worse than the Tigers pitchers did in the World Series.
I'm pulling for Prince to release another album half as good as Purple Rain.
I'm pulling for Al2burquerque to make out with a ball to a degree that's inappropriate for national broadcast.
I'm pulling for Del to see five pitches in a game in which he has five at-bats.
I'm pulling for Derek Lowe to come in an extra-inning game and pitch six perfect innings.
I'm pulling the series goes the distance and both teams eat their bullpens so badly that the NL Champ has a huge advantage.
I'm pulling for inexplicable yet correct calls like the NLWCG game's infield fly.

        1. Sounds like you pulled something. Fill the bathtub with very hot water and liberally pour in Epsom salts. I'm about to do that now also.

        2. I wasn't watching, but:
Good: RAÚL IBAÑEZ hit a homer of Dancy McFartsalot!
No Errors against this crew, but I'm a cruel judge, and I would have given Swisher an Error on Young's tiebreaker "double", and also Jeter an Error on Peralta's single wherein Jeter breaks his ankle. Most players, under ordinary effort do not break their ankles and fail to throw the ball to first.
Bullpens were eaten! 11 innings pitched between them. Only two pitchers threw more than an inning: Dotel and Guy Smyly.

Bad: Lowe only pitched 0.2 innings and gave up a homer to Del.
          Del's pitches seen:
          5 (K)
          4 (Popout)
          1 (H, RBI)
          2 (HR)
          1 (Groundout)
          3 (Double, RBI)*
*Ruled an error, no RBI by AMR.

          The indecisive:
No pitching from Al2burquerque or Scherzer.
No new records yet from Prince.

    2. I just figured the Yanks game was early yesterday so the clinching outs would be in Prime Time

    1. Holy frijoles - I think I've finally found a film that's significantly worse than one of the ones I was in.

It just keeps getting better, and the unsourced quotes at the end are outrageously funny. Did Tommy Wiseau really, really think he'd written a quirky black comedy? If so, why the hell did he produce that trailer?

Also, I can't imagine this trailer left out much of the plot.

      1. Our local gubmint-sponsoring-z'arts-fest has this film scheduled for tonite at 9PM - a comment about 'bad films night', OK to bring stuff to toss, etc. If they just played the trailer, and you could down the wine fast enough, that would be OK.

          1. Sounds like a Pogues standard, if you throw in some S. London acronyms and a couple 'shites'.

            1. It almost fits the chorus of "Sally MacLennane".

To the greatest little boozer and to Sally Maclennane
I'd go with a flask of whiskey and a bag of rotten veg

              ONe little modification...

I'd take a flask of whiskey and a bag of rotten veg

              Perfect.

              1. It almost fits the chorus of "Sally MacLennane".*

yeah, you win the points for today.

*this was the first pogues song I ever heard. I was hooked from then on.

                1. Now it's in my head. I'm not terribly upset about this. I may just go ahead and put "The Very Best of The Pogues" on and crack a beer.

    1. So whoever's counting upon the Yankees to win the WS for their bracket should abandon all hope now.

    2. will that person be fined for not wearing official MLB gear, or not holding a Gatorade bottle in his hand?

  6. Despite the weather to the west of us in Columbia that's making a mess of the 'Bama/Mizzou game, it's breezy, overcast, and warm here, so we took a nice relaxing drive through the Missouri River floodplains. Lots of late soybean harvesting going on. Bought pumpkins and some veggies, a larger mattress to replace in our guest room from a place that manufacturers their own, and a nice wedding band to replace the ring my wife lost a few months ago. Pizza and frozen yogurt to fill out the day.

  7. good sports night on tap: ALCS on TBS, Wolves on FSN+ and WGN, Gopher hockey on FSN, and various college football games.

  8. Amanda Kessel had two goals and an assist in Minnesota's 5-0 victory over host St. Lawrence in a women's nonconference game.

Noora Räty turned back 27 shots for the shutout. Minnesota put 74 shots on goal.

The St. Lawrence goalie had a save percentage over 93 percent and she still allowed five goals.

The U women are the defending champs and the men are ranked No.1 in one poll and No. 2 in the other. With the NHL in hiatus, it's a good time for the U hockey programs to be on top of their respective games.

    1. this is also the last year of the current WCHA. Next year, there will be a Big Ten hockey conference. yuck.

      1. This is a crime. If the Goofs play four games each against, WI, MI, MI St, OH St and Penn St, that's 20 games right there. I'm going to miss ND, UMD, St. Cloud, CC and Denver, not to mention getting the best out of Mankato and Bemidji. Just a shame.

        1. This is the worst thing that could happen to my hanging-by-a-thread interest in college hockey.

    2. It took me until you actually said "hockey" to realize this wasn't a soccer game. I was thinking "HOLY SHIT - 74 SHOTS IN A SOCCER GAME?!"

    3. That's gotta be a typo, socal: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-hockey/stats/2012-2013/12minn5.html

The Strib reported 36 shots in that game as well.

The larger point is well-taken however. I'm probably the only one here to watch the Gophers/Spartans game last night and I'll do it again tonight. Go ahead and mock. The men's team is so deep that it returned it's top six d-men from last season. One was a scratch and one played wing on the fourth line, because of the two stud frosh D the Don brought in this year.

  9. All right, I've determined my rooting interests for the Championship Series'

Usually I'm all for the team with the fewest titles, the biggest underdog, etc. But when it comes down to it, None of these teams really appeal to me. We have the last 3 WS winners, and a team from a city that dominates a different sport.

So, going against all my better judgement, I want to see the Cardinals and Yankees. Yeah, you heard that right. I'm "rooting" for the YANKEES in the ALCS. My reasoning: Since 1994's strike, there have been 17 World Series. The Cardinals and Yankees have been in a combined 10 World Series. Yet they haven't yet been one together. They nearly did it in 1996 and even in 2000. Nearly happened in 2004 as well. You have the two teams with the most World Series. Why not get them in a World Series together. So let's do it. Let's have a classic.

    1. sounds good to me. Besides, beating the Yankees in the World Series will be much more satisfying
