Minor Details: Games of 4/14

Fort Myers remains perfect.  Miguel Sano hits his third homer.  A solid day for Byron Buxton.

PAWTUCKET 5, ROCHESTER 2 IN PAWTUCKET (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Chris Colabello was 2-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring once.  Clete Thomas was 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run, his second.

Pitching stars:  Andrew Albers struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks.  Luis Perdomo struck out three in three perfect innings.  Tyler Robertson pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Brandon Snyder was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once.  Jose De La Torre pitched three shutout innings, allowing no hits and three walks.  Ryan Rowland-Smith pitched three perfect innings.

Key inning:  The fifth.  Leading 2-0, the Red Wings loaded the bases on a single and two walks but failed to score.  Rochester did not get another hit in the game.  Eventually, Pawtucket tied the score in the seventh and won on a three-run homer by Mitch Maier off Anthony Slama.

NEW BRITAIN 6, PORTLAND 5 IN NEW BRITAIN (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Antoan Richardson was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  A. J. Achter pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and one walk while striking out two.  Marty Popham struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Keith Couch pitched 4.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks.  Heiker Meneses was 2-for-4 and scored once.  Ryan Dent was 2-for-4 and scored once.

Key inning:  The tenth.  The score was tied at five.  With two out and a runner on first, Beresford doubled and Ortiz singled to win the game.

FORT MYERS 5, CHARLOTTE 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Miguel Sano was 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, his third.  Angel Morales was 2-for-2 with two walks and scored twice.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks.  Chad Rogers pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.  Zach Jones struck out two in a scoreless inning.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Carpenter struck out six in six innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk.  Jake Hager was 2-for-5 with a triple and scored once.

Key inning:  The seventh.  Fort Myers trailed 2-1.  Jonathan Goncalves led off the inning with a double, took third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.  A walk and a hit batsman put two men on, and Sano killed the rally with a three-run homer.

CLINTON 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CLINTON (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Adam Walker was 2-for-3 with a double.  Byron Buxton was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Dylan Unsworth pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk.  Guillermo Pimentel hit a two-run homer.

Key inning:  The sixth.  With the score tied at two, the first two Clinton batters were retired.  The LumberKings then put together three consecutive singles, two off starter Tyler Duffey, the last off Matthew Tomshaw, to take the lead.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, CLINTON 6 IN CLINTON (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer, scoring twice.  It was his second homer of the season.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Pitching stars:  Starter Taylor Rogers pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Manuel Soliman also pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Guillermo Pimentel was 3-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Dario Pizzano was 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in one.  Grady Wood struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing only a walk.

Key inning:  The sixth.  Trailing 7-4 with two out and none on, Clinton put together three singles and an error to cut the lead to 7-6 and put runners on second and third.  Tim Atherton then recovered to retire Taylor Ard on a fly out.  Clinton did not get another man on base.
