Friday Music Day: June 7, 2013

Much like Phil, I make a summer mix each year. (Not last year, though: my computer was broken.)
However, I feature solely contemporary music: stuff from this year. It's gotten harder, not having cable or listening to the radio or reading Pitchfork. Anyone know what the hot new singles that don't stink will be?

I've got a draft playlist going, but it's got a 15 minute song from Colin Stetson, a 9 minute song from the Knife, an 8 minute house single ("Tunsten" by Barnt), and this fantastic song from Aaron Dilloway. Despite actual decent pop songs from Tristen, Caitlin Rose, and Bad Bad Hats, that's not going to cut it and may turn my whole family against me.

Other than that advice, go ahead and post your random ten as well.

  3. Sheenie and I saw the Rebirth Brass Band at the Dakota last night (we had caught about 5 minutes of their set at JazzFest and, while we paid for a show they were performing during JazzFest weekend, they didn't even go onstage until 2:15am that night and we bailed after Dumpstaphunk finished just before 2am. Very good show, but a 90-second encore that features them singing 3 verses of "When the Saints Go Marching In" combined with a "Who Dat" chant didn't seem like much of an encore.

    Pandora yet again:
    1. The Avett Brothers - "I and Love and You" - I and Love and You*
    2. Fruit Bats - "When U Love Somebody" - Mouthfuls
    3. Jerry Douglas - "The Boxer" - Traveler
    4. Noah and the Whale - "2 Atoms in a Molecule" - Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down
    5. He's My Brother She's My Sister - "Can't See the Stars" - Nobody Dances in This Town

    9. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroe - "40 Day Dream" - Up From Below
    T. Two Door Cinema Club - "Undercover Martyn" - Tourist History
    B. Arcade Fire - "Headlights Look Like Diamonds"

    *I remember when this song first got a lot of airplay. I thought it was godawful. I've definitely enjoyed pretty much everything else by the Avett Brothers way more than this.

  4. Other than that Vampire Weekend song I've mentioned...
    "Lady You Shot Me" - Har Mar Superstar and
    "A New Life" - Jim James

    are the only newer things I've heard that have stood out to me lately.

    Probably no list today, sick kid, busy at work, sister's grad party. Bleh.

    1. Which Vampy Weeks song was it? I just d/led the album on a trial basis, but in passive listening nothing's grabbed me. I think I have to be more active.

      1. "Diane Young". Could be it needs a couple listens for this song. Philosofette was initially unmoved, but was singing it frequently this week.

        Their other stuff from the album ain't bad, but it ain't great either. Nothing that would grab, from what I can tell.

  5. .

    * Bone House - The Dead Weather - Horehound
    * Dancing Days - Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
    * Hating - Korn - Untouchables
    * Prés: First Movement - Anssi Karttunen - Private Gardens (K. Saariaho)
    * Heavy Chevy - Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls

    * Motorcade - The Goslings - Occasion
    * Dream Song - Erik Friedlander - Block Ice and Propane (E. Friedlander)
    * 1,000,000 - Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
    * No Fun - The Black Keys - The Moan
    * Mother - Pink Floyd - The Wall

    Summer Mix - If you hold out until later this month (for the single - July for the full album), there will be new Fuck Buttons.

    1. OK! More F--- Buttons!
      I think I remember how to grab the sound file from soundcloud... Or maybe that's just bandcamp?
      Still, more abraisive instrumental music isn't really what I'm looking for. It sounds nice and a radio edit is up my alley.
      Do they have Andrew Weatherall (Sabres of Paradise/Two Lone Swordsmen) helping them again? I give him a lot of credit for pulling Tarot Sport out of the same band that made Street Horrrsing.

      1. Pitchfork says self-produced. I think I'd prefer F--- Buttons with Weatherall over F--- Buttons self-produced.
