Dominican Digest: Games of 1/4

Day seven of the playoffs.  Pedro Florimon drives in a key run.  A four-run second is enough for Cibao.

ESCOGIDO 8, LICEY 3 IN LICEY

Twins:  Jorge Polanco (Escogido) was used as a pinch-runner and scored.  Pedro Florimon (Escogido) was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Dan Rohlfing (Licey) was 2-for-4.

Escogido:  Pedro Ciriaco (Kansas City) was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Alfredo Marte (Arizona) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Elih Villanueva (Miami) struck out six in six shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks.

Licey:  Engel Beltre (Texas) was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.  Eugenio Velez (Milwaukee) was 1-for-4 with a run.  Hector Noesi (Seattle) pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  An infield out put Escogido ahead 1-0 in the third.  It stayed 1-0 until the seventh, when Escogido put together a five-run rally to go ahead 6-0.  Florimon singled in one, Ciriaco doubled in two, and Marte singled in two.  Beltre hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to get Licey back into the game.  They had men on first and second with one out later in the inning, but a double play ended the threat.  Escogido added two in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

CIBAO 4, AGUILAS 3 IN AGUILAS

Cibao:  Hector Gomez (Milwaukee) was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer.  Maikel Franco (Philadelphia) was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Moises Sierra (Toronto) was 1-for-4 with a run.

Aguilas:  Hector Luna was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run, scoring twice.  Ricardo Nanita was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Chris Cody pitched six innings, allowing four unearned runs on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Luna hit a two-run homer in the first to put Aguilas ahead 2-0.  In the second, Franco singled in one and Gomez hit a three-run homer to put Cibao in front 4-2.  And there things stood until the sixth, when Zoilo Almonte (Yankees) doubled in a run to cut the lead to 4-3.  Almonte reached third base with one out, but did not score.  Aguilas also put a man in scoring position in the seventh and eighth, but to no avail.
