Venezuelan View: Games of 1/19

An eight-run inning lifts Zulia.  A bases-loaded walk brings in the winning run for Magallanes.

ZULIA 11, CARACAS 1 IN CARACAS

Twins:  Oswaldo Arcia (Zulia) was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Zulia:  Sandy Leon (Washington) was 3-for-3 with two walks and a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jose Pirela (Yankees) was 3-for-5 with a walk and a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Wilfredo Boscan pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Caracas:  Alex Romero was 2-for-3 with a double.

The game:  It was a close game for six innings.  Zulia scored in the third on an RBI single by Ender Inciarte (Arizona) and got one more in the fourth on a single and three walks.  Caracas cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a Gregorio Petit (Houston) RBI single.  In the seventh, Zulia put the game out of reach with an eight-run inning.  The inning was highlighted by two-run doubles by Jose Flores and Freddy Galvis (Philadelphia).  Zulia sent twelve men to the plate, getting a triple, three doubles (two by Galvis), two singles, two walks, and a hit batsman.

MAGALLANES 7, LA GUAIRA 6 IN LA GUAIRA

Magallanes:  Pablo Sandoval (San Francisco) was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Ramon Hernandez (Kansas City) was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in two.  Alberto Callaspo (Oakland) was 2-for-4 with two walks and a run.

La Guaira:  Joe Thurston was 4-for-5 with two runs.  C. J. Retherford was 2-for-5 with a double scoring once and driving in two.  Mario Mendoza pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks with one strikeout.

The game:  A two-run double by Cesar Suarez capped a three-run first that put La Guaira ahead 3-0.  Magallanes came back, getting an RBI single by Ronny Cedeno in the second and a two-run double by Sandoval in the third to tie it at three.  La Guaira had another three-run inning in the fifth, getting a two-run double by Retherford and an RBI single by Heiker Meneses (Boston).  Magallanes responded with a three-run inning of its own in the seventh, with one scoring on a Ramon Hernandez (Kansas City) single and two on a double by Ezequiel Carrera (Detroit).  In the eighth, a walk, a single, and two more walks put Magallanes ahead for the first time at 7-6.  Not only did La Guaira not get a hit after the sixth, their last six batters struck out.
