Australian Audit: Games of 1/25

A split in Brisbane.  Ex-Twin Allan de San Miguel is a hero for Perth.

CANBERRA 2, BRISBANE 1 IN BRISBANE (GAME 1--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 0-for-2 with a walk.

Canberra:  Jeremy Barnes was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.  Jon Berti (Toronto) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Ethan Cole pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Brisbane:  Joshua Roberts was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double, scoring once.  Andrew Aizenstadt pitched five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Roberts doubled and scored on a David Sutherland single to put Brisbane ahead 1-0 in the first.  In the Canberra third, a single, a walk, a double steal, and a two-run single by Barnes put Canberra ahead 2-1.  And that was it for the scoring.  Brisbane did threaten twice.  In the fifth, a leadoff single and a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases, but a popup ended the inning.  In the seventh, a pair of two-out walks put the tying run in scoring position, but a fly out ended the game.

BRISBANE 3, CANBERRA 2 IN BRISBANE (GAME 2)

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 0-for-4.

Canberra:  Jon Berti (Toronto) was 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Clint Everts struck out eight in five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Jeff Lyman struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk.

Brisbane:  Patrick Leonard (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer, his second.  Justin O'Conner (Tampa Bay) was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Ryan Searle (Cubs) struck out seven in six innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and one walk.

The game:  There was no score until the fifth, when Robbie Perkins walked, went to second on a bunt, and scored on a Berti single to give Canberra a 1-0 lead.  Brisbane came back to take the lead in the sixth on Leonard's two-run homer.  Canberra tied it back up in the seventh on an error, a single, another error, and a ground out.  In the eighth, Brisbane went into the lead to stay when O'Conner (Colorado) led off the inning with a home run.  Canberra went down in order in the ninth.

PERTH 4, ADELAIDE 3 IN PERTH (10 INNINGS)

Adelaide:  Brock Hebert (Seattle) was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double, scoring once.  Joe Sclafani (Houston) was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Darren Fidge pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Perth:  Joey Wong (Colorado) was 4-for-5 with a run.  Corey Adamson (San Diego) was 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI.  Anthony Claggett struck out seven in six shutout innings, allowing four hits and five walks.

The game:  An RBI single by Brandon Tripp, a bases-loaded hit batsman, and a sacrifice fly scored three in the third to put Perth ahead 3-0.  It looked like that might hold up, but Adelaide scored on in the seventh on an error and tied it in the eighth on an RBI single by Adamson and a run-scoring ground out.  It went to an extra inning.  In the bottom of the tenth Allan de San Miguel (Colorado) singled, went to second on a bunt, and scored on Adamson's single to win the game.

SYDNEY 4, MELBOURNE 2 IN SYDNEY

Melbourne:  Ryan Casteel (Colorado) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Justin Trapp (Kansas City) was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Justin Erasmus struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks.

The game:  Broxton led off the second with a double and scored on a pair of ground outs to put Sydney ahead 1-0.  Melbourne tied it in the fourth on a walk, a wild pitch, and Casteel's RBI single.  In the fifth, three singles, the last an RBI hit by Mitch Dening, put Sydney back in front 2-1.  Shepherd's two-run double in the eighth gave Sydney a pair of insurance runs.  In the ninth, Trapp's RBI double cut the lead to 4-2 and put men on second and third with one out.  A popup and a strikeout ended the threat and the game.
