Minor Details: Games of August 9

Dan Rohlfing pitches his second scoreless inning.  Two consecutive shutouts for Fort Myers.  Joe Mauer gets two more hits.

INDIANAPOLIS 14, ROCHESTER 5 IN INDIANAPOLIS

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in one.  Pedro Florimon was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching star:  Dan Rohlfing, normally a catcher, pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and one walk with one strikeout.  It's his second scoreless inning of the season.

Opposition stars:  Mel Rojas was 3-for-6 with a home run (his fourth) and a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Andrew Lambo was 4-for-6 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in two.  Matt Hague was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer (his fourteenth) and two walks, scoring twice.

The game:  Indianapolis opened the sixth inning with a double, two singles, a walk, a single, and a double, scoring four times.  Jose Tabata drove in two of the runs.  In the fourth, Pinto and Ramirez each had an RBi double to cut the lead to 4-2.  In the fifth, however, the Indians scored six times to put the game out of reach.  Three walks filled the bases, then came two singles, a two-run triple by Lambo, and another single.

Of note:  Doug Bernier was 1-for-4.  Aaron Hicks was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Starter Alex Meyer struck out four in two innings, but gave up four runs on seven hits and and two walks.

NEW BRITAIN 8, ERIE 3 IN ERIE

Batting stars:  Mike Kvasnicka was 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Tony Thomas was 3-for-5 with a home run (his eighth) and two runs.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, his sixteenth.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched four shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Edgar Ibarra struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Ryan O'Rourke struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Jason Krizan was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fifth.  Ramon Cabrera was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Dixon Machado was 1-for-2 with two walks.

The game:  Thomas led off the game with a home run and Rodriguez hit a two-run homer later in the first to give New Britain a 3-0 lead.  Eddie Rosario tripled in a run in the fourth to make it 4-0.  Erie came back in the fifth, scoring three times.  Krizan homered for the first run, Jamie Johnson scored the second with a walk, a stolen base, and two wild pitches, the third scored on an RBI single by Cabrera, making the score 4-3.  The Rock Cats put the game out of reach with four in the seventh.  Brandon Waring had an RBI double in the inning and Kvasnicka knocked in two with a single.  The SeaWolves did not get a hit after Machado's leadoff single in the seventh.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4.  Nate Hanson was 0-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

FORT MYERS 4, PALM BEACH 0 IN PALM BEACH

Batting stars:  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in one.  Aderlin Mejia was 3-for-4 with a double and a run.  Adam Brett Walker was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his twenty-fourth.

Pitching stars:  Steven Gruver pitched five innings, giving up one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.  B. J. Hermsen struck out two in two innings, giving up one hit.  Brandon Peterson struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition star:  Nick Martini was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  Walker II hit a two-run homer in the first.  Max Kepler singled in a run in the fourth and Harrison doubled one home in the fifth.  Palm Beach had only two hits.  Their only threat came in the sixth, when a single and an error put men on first and second with one out.  They managed to advance the man to third, but that was all.  The last eleven Cardinals were retired.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 0-for-4.  Byron Buxton was 2-for-4 with a run.  Kepler was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, KANE COUNTY 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a home run, his sixth.  Max Murphy was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Alex Swim was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Lewis Thorpe struck out seven in six innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and two walks.  Nick Burdi pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jeffrey Baez was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Danny Lockhart was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run.  Carlos Penalver was 1-for-3 with a walk.

The game:  Wade opened the scoring with a solo homer in the fourth.  Baez doubled and scored in the fifth to tie it at one.  Murphy responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give Cedar Rapids a 3-1 lead.  In the seventh, Lockhart tripled and stole home on the back end of a second-and-home double steal to cut the margin to 3-2.  Kane County also had the tying run on second in the ninth on a Baez one-out double, but they did not advance him farther.

Of note:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4.  Joe Mauer was 2-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3 with a walk.

DANVILLE 11, ELIZABETHTON 1 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting star:  Trey Vavra was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Max Povse pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with no strikeouts.  Omar Obergon was 4-for-6 with three hits and two RBIs.  Jordan Edgerton was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

The game:  Danville got one in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the sixth to go up 5-0.  The lone Elizabethton run came in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Nick Gordon and Vavra.  The Braves put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth.  Edgerton had a two-run double in the inning.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Gordon was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Jorge Fernandez was 0-for-4.  Starter Sam Gibbons struck out five in five innings but gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk.

GCL TWINS AT GCL RED SOX

The game was suspended due to rain with the Twins batting in the top of the fourth.  They have men on first and third with none out, but they are trailing 10-3.  The Twins had made five errors so far, leading to seven unearned runs.

DSL TWINS 7, DSL DIAMONDBACKS 2 AT DIAMONDBACKS

Batting stars:  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-2 with a triple and three walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Roni Tapia was 2-for-5 with a double and four RBIs.  Luis Martinez was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Williams Ramirez struck out six in six innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and no walks.  Carlos Aponte pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Robener Cabrera pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Carlos Guzman struck out two in 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two walks.  Melvin Mezquita was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  Mezquita circled the bases in the first inning on a single-plus-error to give the Diamondbacks the early lead.  In the third, a bases-loaded walk and a two-run double by Tapia put the Twins ahead 3-1.  Palacios hit an RBI triple in the fifth and later scored to make it 5-1.  An error led to a Diamondbacks run in the sixth to cut the margin to 5-2, but the Tapia delivered a two-run single in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.
