Minor Details: Games of May 9

A tough night for Alex Meyer.  The longball carries the Lookouts.  The eleventh extra-inning game in thirty games for the Miracle.  A sweep for the Kernels.

LOUISVILLE 10, ROCHESTER 5 IN LOUISVILLE

Batting stars:  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-5 with a grand slam, his fifth homer.  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Stephen Pryor pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  Caleb Thielbar pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.  Ryan O'Rourke pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Yoman Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer (his second) and a double.  Irving Falu was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs.  David Holberg pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  It was tied 1-1 when the Bats scored seven in the third to put the game out of reach early.  They got six consecutive one-out singles and with two out Rodriguez hit a three-run homer.  It was 10-1 after eight, but Ortiz hit a grand slam in the ninth to make the final score look better.

Of note:  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4 with a run.  Alex Meyer pitched 2.2 innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

CHATTANOOGA 7, JACKSON 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Miguel Sano was 2-for-3 with a home run (his sixth), a double, and a walk, scoring twice.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his second.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth.

Pitching stars:  Greg Peavey pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and one walk with one strikeout.  Madison Boer pitched a perfect inning.  D. J. Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits with a strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Tyler Smith was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer.  Jack Reinheimer was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk.  Gabby Guerrero was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.

The game:  A two-out first-inning rally, capped by Harrison's three-run homer, made it 3-0 Lookouts after the first.  It was 4-1 after five, but in the sixth Polanco's two-run homer ended a three-run inning that made it 7-1.  Smith hit a three-run homer in the seventh to make it 7-4.  The Generals brought the tying run up to bat with two out in the ninth but a ground out ended the game.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  Mike Gonzales was 0-for-0 with two walks and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

FORT MYERS 3, JUPITER 2 IN FORT MYERS (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Marcus Knecht was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Alex Swim was 2-for-5 with a run.  Logan Wade was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Brett Lee pitched 7.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Luke Westphal pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Chris Hoo was 2-for-3 with a run.  Scott Lyman pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Knecht tripled and scored in the fifth and Wade singled home a run in the seventh to make it 2-0 Miracle.  In the eighth, the Hammerheads had three singles and took advantage of an error and a walk to tie it 2-2.  In the ninth, three singles loaded the bases with one out and Knecht connected for a sacrifice fly to win the game.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-5.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, BELOIT 2 IN BELOIT (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs.  Zack Larson was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Brett Doe was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his second.

Pitching stars:  Michael Cederoth pitched six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Cameron Booser pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Sandber Pimentel was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and a double.

The game:  Doe's two-run homer capped a three-run Kernel second.  Pimentel homered in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1, but that was as close as the Snappers would get.  The Kernels added single runs in the fourth and sixth.  The Snappers got one back in the bottom of the sixth but did not get the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  Tanner English was 0-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-3.  Trey Vavra was 0-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, BELOIT 2 IN BELOIT (GAME 2--9 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Trey Vavra was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.

Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Junior Mendez pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  Murphy hit a two-run homer in the first and for a while it looked like that would hold up.  But Yairo Munoz singled in a run in the sixth and a run was walked home in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.  The Snappers still had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but a force out at home and a strikeout ended the inning.  In the ninth Pat Kelly singled home the go-ahead run.

Of note:  T. J. White was 0-for-4.  Zack Larson was 1-for-4 with a run.
